1 Healthy Respect Partners Event 17 th March 2016 Waverley Gate, Edinburgh Parenthood & Relationship Education Project (PREP) Enabling children and young people to develop healthy, positive relationships and to prepare for possible future parenthood

2 Introduction Shared desire between WAVE and SG – To make the next generation of parents the best generation of parents A universal resource that could be used by teachers – Linking with the Curriculum for Excellence RSHP – Parenthood component of RSHP is not fully addressed in SHARE or other similar resources Ability to be adapted to other settings – Youth work, residential units, prison, other specialist settings

3 Introduction PREP aims to develop, pilot then produce a relationships and parenthood preparation toolkit for young people So far we have – conducted an international review of best practice – interviewed 55 young people and 52 professionals – identified (based on our research) 14 Topics (grouped under 5 ‘R’s’) 4 Underlying Values – created 16 session plans – piloted and evaluated several session plans

6 Topics and Key Learning Relationships R1Positive relationships Qualities and skills necessary to sustain positive and healthy relationships How relationships can promote health and wellbeing Importance of being cared for and caring for others in relationships How to show appreciation to others who care for me R2Connectedness How babies communicate with their caregivers and how to connect with babies Baby states and cues and why these are an important part of parenting Importance of listening and observing What "connectedness" means and why love matters

7 Topics and Key Learning Resilience R3Managing change Skills to manage change and make decisions about relationships Change is a constant part of life but can be dealt with by different skills and strategies How to approach the frequent changes that can happen in relationships How and why to end a relationship R4Emotional intelligence Dynamics of emotional intelligence and how self-awareness, self-esteem, self- management and social awareness can help to develop emotional resilience Practical ways to grow self-worth and self-esteem, for myself and in my future possible child R5 Strengthening mental health Promotion of mental wellbeing through positive relationships and personal coping skills Many people experience poor mental health and support is available for them Five steps to mental wellbeing (#connect #be active #keep learning #give to others #be mindful) and how they can help build up resilience to the challenges of life

12 Toolkit – Session Plans

13 Toolkit Session Plans Each session plan contains – Key Learning – Links with HWB Es and Os – Resources Required – Suggested Learning + Success Criteria – Additional Sources of information – Resource materials (which can be edited) – Facilitator Notes – to provide background and additional information to facilitators The toolkit will also contain a general guide to running a session

14 Toolkit – Evaluation Materials

15 Pilot Testing Schools, youth groups and others were invited to test the sessions So far – 36 young people have participated in pilots of 7 sessions – Most groups have been small – Peer educators have developed and tested some activities Evaluation will determine: – Success of sample activities in achieving outcomes; – Usability of forms (consent forms, evaluation forms etc.); – Ease of use of learner resources and materials, and – Effectiveness of evaluation tools.

16 Evaluation and Review We will bring together information from – Participant evaluations – Facilitator evaluations – Key Stakeholder feedback We are in the process of updating the toolkit to reflect the feedback so far The completed version will be available at the National Event and then online afterwards

17 National Event – 28 th April The National Event will be held on 28 th April in Edinburgh It will aim to – inspire practitioners and decision makers to change the way we talk to young people about parenthood and relationships – share latest research and international best practice with regards to parenthood and relationships education programmes – explain how the PREP toolkit works and how it can be used in a variety of settings to deliver significant aspects of learning on Parenthood – support those involved with educating young people in Scotland to meet the Health & Wellbeing curricular requirements
