Part 1 File Formats Definition: A file format is a way to write the code of information for storage of an electronic file on a computer. Different software programs save files using file extensions at the end of the file names.fileformatcomputer File format extensions for MSOffice 2010 programs: Word (Word Processing) =.docx PowerPoint (Presentation Software) =.pptx Excel (Spreadsheet) =.xlsx Access (Database) =.accdb

Finding Files Have you ever used the Open command from the File menu and not found the file you wanted? It may because the file format may not be able to be read by the application you are using. Huh? For example, if you try to open an Excel file when you are using Word, you will not be able to see the file listed. What can you do?

You could switch the file type within the Open dialog box to show All Files. But, that does not necessarily mean that the application will be able to open the file. Therefore, you should open a file in the application you used to create it.

Part 2 File Formats Definition: A file format is a way to write the code of information for storage of an electronic file on a computer.fileformatcomputer What is a BITMAP? Bitmap images are formed by a pattern of dots Each single point in the image is a pixel (picture element) The smaller the pixels in the image, the smoother it will look The more colors in the image, the brighter and sharper the image will look

Let’s find out more about file formats…

.bmp standard bit-mapped graphics format used in the Windows environment bit map picture, consists of rows and columns of dots, to create a graphics image pixels (dots of color) are not compressed requires a lot of storage Avoid saving in this format
