A computerised connection: Using GIS in the classroom Alice Baker PGCE Student UCL IOE alicebaker93@hotmail.co.uk @Bakeynator

What is GIS?  Geographical Information Systems  A set of tools which allow for data:  Collection  Storage  Retrieval  Manipulation  Analysis  Display

Why should we teach it?  Rapid growth of ICT  Pupils can learn to think spatially  Geographical skills  Enquiry based learning  Progression of learning  Practical applications  It’s on the National Curriculum!

How can we teach it?  Fieldwork  Enquiry tasks

What systems are available?  Proprietary Software  ArcGIS  MapInfo  Manifold  Open Source  QGIS  MapWindow  Geographic Resources Analysis Support System (GRASS)  Web Systems  Google Earth  Digimap for schools  ArcGIS Online  Ordnance Survey – Mapzone

Examples: Site Suitability for Wind Turbines

Examples: Evacuation Scenario The scenario is that you are in charge of the evacuation plans for when Mount Vesuvius next erupts. The next eruption could cover an area of 30km from the volcano with 2m of ash. You need to find out: 1.Where is the 30km boundary? 2.How many people live within 30km of the volcano? 3.How far can people travel in 1 hour, 1.5 hours and 2 hours from the centre of Naples?

Examples: Relief Mapping

Example: Mapping Pen-Y-Pass
