2 Unit 2 Assignments… Seminar Project Discussion: 1 thread Make sure to interact with your peers by asking them questions and furthering the discussion

3 Unit 2 Project…Job Exploration Review the early childhood development jobs described in the unit and then go to an online career/employment site, such as Monster.com or Jobing.com. Search for jobs in the childcare, preschool, or the K-2 setting. After you have explored the job listings for a while, choose two of the jobs that interest you. If you are unable to find any suitable jobs at the career site, you may use your local newspaper.

4 Unit 2 Project…. Then, for each job, complete the following using the template provided: List the job title and job description. List the skills needed for the job, taken both from the job description and your own analysis of the job. Be sure to list at least five skills, three of which are specific skills in the early childhood development field. Explain why each of the skills listed in #2 would be needed to succeed in the position you have selected.

8 Center-Based Careers… When you think of Center- Based Careers, what types of positions and care come to mind?

9 Center-Based Careers… Child care facilities Usually in a nonresidential building Falls under state licensing Usually consists of infant, toddler, preschool, prekindergarten and before/after school care Most children are enrolled in preschool or pre- kindergarten programs, but there is an increase of enrollment in infant and toddler programs

10 Center-Based Careers… Non-Profit Childcare: YMCA, recreation departments Faith-Based Centers: church or other- religious affiliation Franchise Centers: Kindercare, Tutor Time Employer-Sponsored Childcare: on-site care for employees’ children Cooperative Childcare: usually run by families with common interests

11 Center-Based Positions… Childcare Owner Director Administrator Head Teacher Teacher Assistant or Aide What are the roles for each of these positions?

12 Roles…. Childcare Owner, Director, and Administrator: oversee all aspects of program including staff, curriculum and facility Head Teacher: responsible for day-to-day operation of the classroom, curriculum, planning, record keeping, supervision of staff and of each child Teacher Assistant or Aide: assist head teacher, helps with daily care and teaching of children

13 Home-Based Careers… Childcare provided in a home setting Small groups of children, mixed ages Licensing requirements vary by state Nannies and Au-Pairs fall in this category too!

14 Community-Based Careers… Social Worker Childcare Health Consultant Children’s Librarian Child Life Specialists Teacher

15 Public & Private School Careers… Teacher: Licensing/credentialing varies by state Special Education Teacher Teacher in Residential Facilities
