“Why You Are Born” Exodus 2:11-22 08/08/2010 Dr. Dane Boyles

“Why You Are Born” Why were you were born? –Early in life we dream of greatness. –Why do we lose it?

“Why You Are Born” Moses’ Sense of Justice (2:11-12). 11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. (2:11)

“Why You Are Born” 12 Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. (2:12) 25 Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not (Acts 7:25).

“Why You Are Born” Justice (2:13-14). 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?” (2:13)

Exodus 2:14 14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”

“Why You Are Born” 11 “Who am I?” (3:11). 14 “Man, who appointed me a judge or arbiter between you?” (Luke 12:14).

Luke 2:15 15 …“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”

“Why You Are Born” Justice in Midian (2:15-23). –Moses’ encounter with women by the well (2:15-17). 15 When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well. (2:15)

Exodus 2:16 16 Now a priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came to draw water and fill the troughs to water their father’s flock.

Exodus 2:17 17 Some shepherds came along and drove them away, but Moses got up and came to their rescue and watered their flock.

“Why You Are Born” –Moses’ Home (2:18-20). 18 When the girls returned to Reuel their father, he asked them, “Why have you returned so early today?” (2:18)

Exodus 2:19-20 19 They answered, “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock.” 20 “And where is he?” he asked his daughters. “Why did you leave him? Invite him to have something to eat.”

“Why You Are Born” –Moses’ Family (2:21-22). 21 Moses agreed to stay with the man, who gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses in marriage. (2:21)

Exodus 2:22 22 Zipporah gave birth to a son, and Moses named him Gershom, saying, “I have become an alien in a foreign land.”

Hebrews 11:24-25 24 By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time.

Hebrews 11:26 26 He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.

Hebrews 11:27 27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.

Ezekiel 18:32 32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live! (cf. 1 Tim. 2:3-4)

Hebrews 13:13-14 13 Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. 14 For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.
