Success: A Critical Review of Benjamin Franklin

What is Success? LATIN Succedere- come close after LATIN Successus ENGLISH Succeed Success Mid 16 th Century

Success and life fullfillment are a relatively new problem. The concept of work fullfillment wasn’t even recognized until the later years of Franklin’s life. He is often credited as producing the first “self help” publication.

“He set up the first dummy American” -D.H. Lawrence Created 13 virtues for the model American Franklin’s vision of success revolved around monetary wealth Critic D.H. Lawrence proposed his own 13 virtues based on a different kind of wealth

“A Different Kind of Wealth” On Resolution- “Resolve to perform what you ought; perform without fail what you resolve.” –Franklin “Resolve to abide by your own deepest promptings, and to sacrifice the smaller thing to the greater. Kill when you must, and be killed the same…” –Lawrence *Notice the opposing viewpoints, Franklin is concerned with the opinion of others whereas, Lawrence is only concerned with his own view of himself.

“A Different Kind of Wealth” On Cleanliness- “Tolerate no uncleanliness in body, clothes, or habitation.” -Franklin “Don't be too clean. It impoverishes the blood.” –Lawrence

“A Different Kind of Wealth” On Industry- “Lose no time, be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary action.” –Franklin “Lose no time with ideals; serve the Holy Ghost; never serve mankind.” –Lawrence *Franklin’s writings on the surface suggest a society that is self-serving but, with deeper review, critics like Lawrence spotlight how his teachings set-up the groundwork for one to “enslave” his fellow man in industry.

“A Different Kind of Wealth” On Silence- “Speak not but what may benefit others or yourself; avoid trifling conversation”- Franklin “Be still when you have nothing to say; when genuine passion moves you, say what you've got to say, and say it hot”-D.H. Lawrence
