March 7 th and 8th Unit 6: Earth Science Inquirers Objective(s): 1.SWBAT classify rocks by the process of their formation. Relevance: Over time, our Earth has changed drastically and it continues to change, even if we don’t always recognize those changes. One way in which our Earth continues to change is through the rock cycle. Do Now: Four Square Do now MATERIALS NEEDED: 1.Pencil 2.Unit 7, Day 2 Packet 3.Agenda

Why is the Earth’s interior separated into layers? What is the state of matter of the outer core and the inner core? Label the mantle on the diagram below: Label the Lithosphere on the diagram below: Four-Square Do Now 5 min Silently fill in the table on your daily packet

BrainPop 1.What are the three basic types of rocks? 2.What is magma called when it is above ground? 3.What type of rock forms from cooled lava? 4.Igneous rocks can be formed into metamorphic rocks when enough heat and pressure is applied. 5.In sedimentary rock, where is the oldest rock in the layers? Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic Lava Igneous On the bottom 5 min

Vocabulary Gallery Walk You will have 15 minutes to perform a gallery walk to the posters around the room. At each poster, you need to copy the word and definition, draw your own picture, and create your own prediction about the word. No more than 5 people at one poster.

Watch out! Weathering and erosion do not mean the same thing! Weathering is the action that breaks down rock into sediment and erosion is the movement of that sediment. Magma and lava are not the same. Magma is inside the Earth, lava is above ground.

Types of Rocks Rocks are solid Earth materials formed from a mixture of minerals and sometimes other materials. All rocks can be classified into three categories – igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. They are categorized based on the process in which they are formed. What are the three types of rocks? What is the main criterion scientists use to classify rocks?

Tree Map Today you will create a tree map in order to take and organize your notes. I will show one example of a tree map. I will have the tree map you’ll be creating today on the document camera.

Types of Rocks Igneous - extrusiveIgneous - intrusive SedimentaryMetamorphic

Watch out! Rocks are not too strong to be bent or deformed – they are weathered and eroded every day. Rocks are a mixture of many different types of minerals and grains – they are not made of one type of material. Rocks are not the same as minerals. Rocks do not have to be large.

30 sec! Match ‘em Up! A.Igneous B.Sedimentary C.Metamorphic 1.Rocks formed from compacted and cemented sediments. 2.Rocks formed under extreme heat and pressure. 3.Rocks formed from cooled lava.

Describe the building of sedimentary rocks. Think-Pair-Share

Guided Practice We will play a different version of horse races. I will give you a description of a type of rock and it will be up to your group to categorize the rock as igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic. I will give you 15 seconds to discuss as a group and then you will hold up fingers to display the type of rock you think it is. Groups who have it correct will move their horse one space. The first horse across the finish line wins! 12 min

30 sec! Word Scramble Challenge! CIMROPETMA Definition: A type of rock that forms from already existing rock that has been changed through extreme heat and pressure. METAMORPHIC Definition: A type of rock that forms from already existing rock that has been changed through extreme heat and pressure.

Independent Practice Complete the worksheet over classifying various types of rocks. Work independently at a Voice Level 0. When you finish, you may check your answers. 17 min

Complete the exit ticket silently. Turn in as you leave. You may pack up your things. Exit Ticket

STOP Cards SSummarize: Summarize the day’s lesson and what we learned. TTrait: What IB trait relates to the lesson? OObjective: Re-state in your own words and say whether or not we met that objective for the day. PPurpose: What was the purpose of this lesson?
