NONRENEWABLE vs RENEWABLE Renewable energy that comes from resources which are naturally replenished on a human timescale such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat. Nonrenewable Energy sources are considered nonrenewable if they cannot be replenished (made again) in a short period of time.

Fossil Fuels fuels formed by natural processes such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms. The age of the organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically millions of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million years.

Fossil Fuels - NONRENEWABLE Advantages Can produce huge amounts of energy Disadvantages nonrenewable Can damage the environment

Coal NONRENEWABLE (from the Old English term col, which has meant "mineral of fossilized carbon" since the 13th century) is a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock

Coal Advantages Easy to transport Provides lots of energy when burned Plentiful supply Disadvantages Can be difficult and dangerous to mine Can result in air pollution Mining can result in damage to the environment NONRENEWABLE

Oil NONRENEWABLE a liquid mixture of hydrocarbons that is present in certain rock strata and can be extracted and refined to produce fuels including gasoline, kerosene, and diesel oil; oil.

Oil Advantages Can be made into many different petroleum products Can be used to power buildings and many types vehicles Disadvantages Can be difficult to drill NONRENEWABLE

Natural Gas NONRENEWABLE a fossil fuel formed when layers of buried plants, gases, and animals are exposed to intense heat and pressure over thousands of years. The energy that the plants originally obtained from the sun is stored in the form of chemical bonds in natural gas.

Natural Gas Advantages Produces large amounts of energy at lower levels pollution than other types of fossil fuels Easy to transport in pipelines or compressed into a liquid to store in tanks Disadvantages HIGHLY FLAMMABLE NONRENEWABLE

Nuclear Energy NONRENEWABLE the energy released during nuclear fission or fusion, especially when used to generate electricity.

Nuclear Energy Advantages Clean source of energy Overall, has been very safe Disadvantages Radioactive waste Safety concerns in nuclear power plants A single uranium fuel pellet the size of a fingertip contains as much energy as 17,000 cubic feet of natural gas, 1,780 pounds of coal 149 gallons of oil.

Solar Energy RENEWABLE radiant light and heat from the sun harnessed using a range of ever- evolving technologies

Solar Energy Advantages RENEWABLE Does not cause pollution FREE RESOURCE Disadvantages Only available when the sun is shining Can be expensive to buy equipment

Wind Energy RENEWABLE the energyextracted from wind using wind turbines to produce electrical power, windmills for mechanical power, windpumps for water pumping, or sails to propel ships.

Wind Energy Advantages RENEWABLE FREE RESOURCE Does not cause pollution Disadvantages Can be expensive to buy equipment for wind farms Few places have steady wind needed for wind farms

Hydroelectric Power RENEWABLE electricity generated by hydropower; the production of electrical power through the use of the gravitational force of falling or flowing water.

Hydroelectric Power Advantages RENEWABLE Inexpensive compared to other fuel sources Does not create air pollution Disadvantages Dams can be harmful to the environment Most suitable rivers have already been dammed

Geothermal Energy RENEWABLE Geothermal energy is the heat from the Earth. Resources of geothermal energy range from the shallow ground to hot water and hot rock found a few miles beneath the Earth's surface, and down even deeper to the extremely high temperatures of molten rock called magma.

Geothermal Energy Advantages RENEWABLE Unlimited source of energy Cheap energy produced Disadvantages Not all places on Earth are suitable for a Geothermal Wells

Biomass Fuels RENEWABLE Biomass is a fancy name for material from plants and animals. Some kinds of biomass can be burned to produce energy. Biomass contains stored energy. That's because plants absorb energy from the sun. When biomass is burned, this stored energy is released as heat.

Biomass Fuels Advantages RENEWABLE Reduces our need on foreign oil Disadvantages Production can be expensive Has raised the price of crops like corn Still can produce CO 2 which can lead to global warming

Hydrogen Power (Hydrogen Fuel Cells) RENEWABLE hydrogen is an energy carrier. The energy can be delivered to fuel cells and generate electricity and heat, or burned to run a combustion engine. In each case hydrogen is combined with oxygen to form water.

Hydrogen Power (Hydrogen Fuel Cells) Advantages RENEWABLE Does not cause pollution Fuel is in large supply Disadvantages EXPENSIVE
