5 B. Elements 1. Substance made up of only one type of atom. 2. About 25 elements are known to be essential to life. 3. Nitrogen, Carbon, Oxygen, and Hydrogen make up 96% of living matter. 4.Phosphorus, sulfur, calcium, potassium, and a few others make up the remaining 4%.
