2 What Is Intelligence?  Intelligence is a person’s capacity for goal directed adaptive behavior ------- includes several abilities. Ability to learn from experience, solve problems, and use knowledge to adapt to new situations  Intelligence Test?  Activity: How Smart Are You?

3 General Intelligence The g Factor: General Intelligence  Charles Spearman believed we have one general intelligence   We all have a common skill set

4 Factor Analysis Intelligence is a person’s capacity for goal directed adaptive behavior ----- -- includes several abilities Factor Analysis approach Statistical procedure that “clusters” different types of intelligence questions together that test the same kind of intelligence. Example: verbal, spacial, reasoning Unfolding boxes, nonsense words

5 Gardner’s Eight Intelligences Gardner and Multiple Intelligences  Gardner views intelligences as multiple abilities that come in different packages  Handout: 8 multiple intelligences  Devised a curriculum for schools to tap all intelligences  Savant Syndrome:  i.e Rain Man

6 Sternberg’s Three Intelligences Robert Sternberg: 3 Types of intelligences 1.Analytical Intelligence (academic problem solving): 2. Practical Intelligence: required for everyday tasks; multiple solutions. 7 Emotional Intelligence Emotional Intelligence (EI)  4 Components:   Good grades, high IQ are NOT always a predictor or work achievement.  Emotionally intelligent people can deal with bumps of life, get along with people, and handle conflicts.  Social Intelligence:  Academic aptitude gets you INTO the school/profession, EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE needed for success!

8 NEUROLOGICAL MEASUREMENTS OF INTELLIGENCE A. HEAD SIZE and Intelligence? BRAIN SIZE and intelligence? B. Link possibly between how quickly we perceive what is stimulating thinking and intelligence = PERCEPTION OF THINGS! C. Speed : D. Frontal lobe activates when answering questions on intelligence tests E. Left brain-> verbal questions. Ample gray and white matter enable efficient communication between brain circuits
