2 About this course GPS 101 is a 30-minute course that teaches the following skills: Selecting appropriate and inappropriate forms of contact with supervisors Choosing the right types of questions to bring to the academic supervisor Choosing the right types of questions to bring to the on-site supervisor Using a solution plan to solve problems independently Ideal learners Students soon to embark on internship Unclear about how actors are different from one another System requirements Computer with a common-used web browser Internet connection and firewall access to the course website; and Working audio system connected to computer

3 Contents This course is divided into 4 units, each with an end of unit quiz. They can be taken at your own pace, but in order. UNIT 1: What is a supervisor and how do I get in touch? UNIT 2: Who is the academic supervisor and what do they do? UNIT 3: Who is the on-site supervisor and what do they do? UNIT 4: What are some areas I can Satisfaction Survey

9 When should I contact my supervisors? -Is this something I need to contact my supervisor with? -Is there a way I can solve this problem myself? -Am I contacting the right person?

10 Consider the appropriate means to contact your supervisor. Don’t call or write too much. If they haven’t responded to your message yet – just wait. Writing 10 more times wont make them respond quicker – it will just make you look crazy! Your supervisor will provide mentorship, but they are not your therapist. Its inappropriate to contact them with personal problems that have nothing to do with the internship.

11 Consider the appropriate means to communicate with your supervisor. Attending regular, scheduled meetings Contacting your supervisor with questions related to their role. Being open and honest about relevant issues relating to the internship.
