1 Nuclear Masses WG, Tuesday (May 29) afternoon (a brief summary) Anu Kankainen (Jyvaskyla) Filip Kondev (ANL) Peter Moller (LANL) Bernd Pfeiffer (GSI) Friedrich Thielemann (Basel)

2 2 What we discussed?  nuclear masses – theory a new mass table will be available soon from P. Moller – underlined the importance of the nuclear shape – new table of deformation parameters HFB-14 is coming also soon (F. Thielemann)  fission barriers a detailed table of fission barriers will be published soon by P. Moller  decay data F. Thielemann & P. Moller made a strong case for the importance of NS & decay data – FT: T1/2 are as important as the reaction rates, especially for the r-process P. Moller – stressed the need for a continuation of the decay data evaluation NUBASE (G. Audi et al.) – or something in a similar format – useful for future models development

3 3  nuclear masses - evaluation play a seminal role in all aspects of astrophysics research & modeling, and other areas of basic and applied nuclear physics all participants (and groups) expressed strong concerns about the future of this important activity the situation in Europe is still uncertain - there is no a successor to G. Audi’s who can continue the AME effort – no long-term commitment there is a big concern at IAEA-NDS – group in India, but it did not work - numerous contacts with groups at Orsay, GSI & Jyvaskyla - 17 th meeting of the NSDD network will take place in St. Petersburg June 9-16 – representative from GSI and Jyvaskyla will be presented there is a growing concern in US (research and data evaluation communities & sponsoring agencies ONP/SC/DOE and NSF) there is an interest at ANL to continue the AME for foreseen future – we have well established ND evaluation infrastructure & there is a strong experimental program in house (G. Savard group) – we had discussions with many colleagues (NS, astrophysics & mass measurements) – in general their comments were supportive discussions are still ongoing – some recent information (from this morning)

4 4  e-mail from D. Lunney (Orsay) – following discussions we have had at the a recent workshop at ANL (together with Guy Savard) – David had also discussions with Christoph Scheidenberger (GSI) & Alan Nichols (IAEA) Chtistoph intends to submit a letter of intend to the FP7 European initiative (EURONS) requesting a 4 years support of a post-doc who will work in collaboration with Orsay form a network with partners who have an active mass measurements programs in Europe – non EU institutes will be also invited to join after 4 years they will request that GSI and/or IN2P3 (Orsay) create a position for AME Christoph, Guy and David will meet at the EMIS conference next week to further discuss this approach This is a very positive development!!!
