2 Framework Programme 7 European Union Grant Funding for Research and Development. 2008 - 2014 Total funds = €54 billion 2008 - 2014 Budget for Health Care = €30 billions Consortia comprising Universities, Research Institutes, and Business with bias for SMEs Projects selected on Scientific Objectives, Governance and Exploitation

3 Framework Programme 7 Focuses research on science led innovation De-risks medical device innovation thru funding high risk research and creating market pull, with dissemination. Encourages public/private/third sector collaboration. Drives commercial advantage for SMEs BUT DOES NOT Develop technologies/products Organise supply chains and marketing/distribution partnerships Prove commercial value Provide capital for exploitation of the research

4 Avantrasara Exploitation Manager for DiPAR - early stage diagnosis of Parkinsons Disease - funded Exploitation Manager for BrainAging - pending Exploitation Manager for NeuroTech - work in progress o Draft call in 2011 work plan o Objective ICT-2011.5.1: Personal Health Systems (PHS)  Personal Health Systems for remote management of diseases, treatment and rehabilitation, outside hospitals and care centres.  Rehabilitation of stroke and neurological conditions: providing patient services at home, with telesupervision by health professionals as and when required.

7 Post Project Opportunities Output is o Rehabilitation of neurodegenerative diseases o Personalised care for individual patients o Low cost, accessible care regardless of location o Improved accessibility of clinical specialists o Improved understanding of physiology/cognitive/motor function relationships o Faster and more effective on-going research o Faster and more effective development of treatments

9 Summary FP7 enables research commercial businesses wouldn't otherwise undertake But how do the results get turned into products and services which deliver the benefits?
