Manifest Destiny Chapter 13 sec. 1 & 2

Mountain Men Mountain men were tough and resourceful – Live most of the year alone – Trapped small animal Beaver pelts were used to make men’s hats From 1825-1840 mountain men would bring their furs to a designated location to trade with Easterners for supplies and money – (Rendezvous System)

As the mountain men trapped out the animals of the Plains they had to move to the Far West. – The trails they created became the routes that western settles used

The Lure West Many people saw the opening of the West as a chance to get rich – Land Speculators were people who bought huge areas of land in the hope it would become more valuable – Manufactures and merchants also moved West to make money off the growing populations of farmers and miners – Others were looking for an escape

Settling Texas Tejas was the land just the west of the LA purchase controlled by Spain – Very few Tejanos live in Texas – Stephen Austin’s dad had permission from Spain to start a colony there but Texas became part of Mexican and Mores Austin’s claim was worthless (1821)

Stephen Austin went to Mexico City to get permission to start a colony in the now Mexican controlled Texas After a year of negotiations, Austin was granted permission – Had to agree to become Mexican citizen and members of the Roman Catholic Church

Between 1821 -1827, S. Austin got 297 families to move into his new settlement By 1830 – the American population of Texas was about 30,000

Rising Tensions in Texas As the number of Americans rose, so did tensions with the Tejanos. – Americans were mad that all laws were written in Spanish – Slave owners were upset that slavery was outlawed in Mexico in 1829

The problem between the Tejanos and Americans became so bad that the Mexican Gov. sent an official investigator to see what was going on – He reported back to the government in Mexico City that they need to take action because “Texas could throw the whole nation into a Revolution”

Austin met with Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna to see about making some reforms to Texas law – When Santa Anna found out that Austin supported Texas becoming independent, he had Austin thrown in jail for a year

The Alamo In March of 1836 the Texans declared their independence. – Sam Houston became the commander of the Texas Army – Sam had 2 companies 420 men stationed at Goliad 183 volunteers at the Alamo

Commanded by William Travis – Davy Crockett & Jim Bowie were also there – Travis answered Santa Anna’s demand for surrender with cannon fire On the 13 th day of the stand off, Santa Anna ordered more than 1,800 troops to storm the fort. – There were only 5 survivors.

Mexican forces captured the troops at Goliad and kill more than 300 Texans “Remember the Alamo! Remember Goliad!” became the rallying cry for Sam Houston’s Army – Houston’s Army defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto Mexican Army was crushed in a matter of minutes and Santa Anna was forced to sign a treaty granting Texas it’s freedom.

The Lone Star Republic In September 1836, Texas raised their flag Sam Houston was elected president of the Lone Star Republic – Many of the Texans still saw themselves as Americans and wanted to join the Union – North did not want another slave state in the Union Congress decided not to annex Texas Texas remained independent for nearly 10 years
