1 Epithelial Tissue Types: Simple Squamous Epithelium: Location:
Lines air sacs (alveoli) in lungs Forms walls of capillaries Lines inside of blood and lymph vessels Covers membranes that line body cavities. Description: Single layer of thin, flattened cells that fit tightly together. Function: Allow diffusion and filtration (Ex. CO2 and O2 are exchanged)

2 2. Simple cubiodal epithelium:
Location: Lines the follicles of the thyroid gland Covers the ovaries Lines the kidney’s tubules and ducts of certain glands (salivary, pancreas and liver) 2. Description: Single layer of cubed-shaped cells. 3. Function: Kidneys – Tubular secretion and tubular absorption Glands – Secretes glandular products (hormones, saliva, etc)

3 3. Simple Columnar Epithelium:
Location: Ciliated – Uterine tube / Fallopian tubes Non-ciliated – Lines uterus and portions of the digestive tract (stomach, small and large intestine) 2. Description: Single layer of elongated cells. 3. Function: Ciliated – Helps move egg cell through the Fallopian tubes Non-ciliated – Protects underlying tissues, Secretes digestive juices and absorbs nutrients from digested food.

4 Pseudostratified Epithelium
Location: Line passages of the respiratory system 2. Description: Two or more levels in a row of aligned cells. Gives the illusion of multiple layers of cells. 3. Function: Sticky and trap dust and microorganisms. Cilia move mucus and captures pesticides out of airways.

5 Stratified Squamous Epithelium:
Location: Outermost layer of skin Lines the oral cavity, esophagus, vagina and anal canal. 2. Description: Many layers of cells. 3. Function: Prevents water and other substances from escaping underlying tissues Blocks chemicals and microorganisms from entering.

6 Transitional epithelium:
Location: Inner lining of urinary bladder, lines the ureters and part of the urethra. 2. Description: Cells can contract – several layers look cuboidal Outer borders of cells on free surface seem ‘scalloped’ (rounded) Tissue can stretch 3. Function: Forms barrier that helps prevent the contents of the urinary tract from diffusing back into the internal environment.
