Contraception Learning Objectives: 1.To know what contraception is. 2.To explore what Catholics believe about contraception and why. 3.To explore different Christian views on contraception

By the end of the lesson you will: MUST - Know the difference between artificial and natural methods of contraception. SHOULD - Be able to explain different Christian views on contraception COULD – Design a poster on the sanctity of life.

Starter... Watch the PowerPoint. Make a list of why human beings are special.

‘Sanctity of life’ is the key idea This means that all human life is sacred It is precious because it is a gift from God Nothing should be done to destroy it God has a plan for everyone. He decides when we live and when we die.

Contraception How many types of contraception have you heard of?

Catholic Teachings: Artificial contraception is wrong. In 1930 Pope Pius XII condemn the use of any artificial contraception. Catholics should only use the rhythm method. Later supported by Pope JPI. In 1968 published ‘Humanae Vitae’. Also supported by Pope II and Benedict. The Catechism states that it is wrong.

WHY? God gave sex for reproduction. Every act of sex must be open to the possibility of new life. Can cause promiscuity and broken families, disease and divorce. Rhythm method is natural and part of God’s creation. Sex should be restricted to marriage. Family will be restored and disease reduced. Some types of contraception are thought to bring on an early abortion (the morning after pill). This is classed as murder.

However… Some Catholics follow their conscience and disagree with Catholic teaching. ‘Human Life in Our Day’. Need to think about the situation.(Eg AIDS in Africa)

Quaker and C of E attitudes to contraception… Almost all non catholic Christians believe that it is acceptable to use contraception. 1930 (Lambeth conference) – Effective method of family planning. BECAUSE… Improves women's health Raises the standard of living and education for children because there are fewer. God created sex for enjoyment and to cement the bonds of marriage (not just to be baby making machines!!!) Effective in the fight against sexually transmitted diseases.

Task What is the difference between natural and artificial contraception? Explain why there are different Christian attitudes towards contraception.

Plenary What have you learnt? What do you need to spend more time on? Make a list of all the new key words.
