5. The Jewish Home The way in which the Jewish family dress, eat and live are important parts of their faith. In today’s lesson we are going to look at how you would recognise a Jewish home by the different artefacts in it and the way it is designed and investigate the foods that are allowed and are NOT allowed to be eaten by Jewish people…..

6. Hanukiah This is a hanukiah. It is a candlestick with eight main branches and one ‘servant’ branch. It is used in the Jewish home during the special festival of Hanukah L/O: To recognise how Jewish people live out their faith in their own home

7. Mezuzah This is a mezuzah. It is a metal or wooden casing which contains a tiny scroll of the Torah (sacred texts in Judaism) It is attached to every doorpost of a Jewish home (except the bathrooms and toilet). 11. Kosher food The law says that meat and dairy products cannot be eaten together. It is written like this in the Torah: “You shall not boil a kid in it’s mothers milk”. So, for example, butter will not be used in a beef sandwich, nor will milk or a cream sauce be poured over chicken! L/O: To understand what Kosher food is

12. Kosher food Jewish people will usually wait three hours before ‘mixing’ dairy with meat. So a pudding with custard or cream or a coffee with milk would not follow a meat course. L/O: To understand what Kosher food is

13. Kosher kitchen Foods that are allowed are called ‘kosher’. To be classed as ‘kosher’ the food must be prepared in a certain way. There is a list of food in the book of Leviticus (one of the first five books of the Old Testament) in which God gives instructions to His people on what they are and are NOT allowed to eat. Kosher foods All plants are kosher, but not all fish and animals are. “Animals which chew the cud and have hooves which are split” ARE allowed (cows and sheep) Animals that do NOT (pigs and rabbits) are TREYFAH This is the word for ‘opposite of kosher’) Fish are allowed if they have fins and scales but shellfish are not allowed.
