2 The Big Picture D. Nicole Smith – Commissioned Study, January 2012 Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce STEM jobs will grow from 6.8 million to 8 million by 2018 – Jobs requiring STEM competencies – 45 million STEM will provide 2.4 million job openings in 2018 – 1.1 million net new jobs and 1.3 million replacement jobs 92% of STEM jobs will require some postsecondary education and training For women and minorities, STEM is the best equal opportunity employer (although pay gaps still exist)

3 Tennessee STEM Innovation Network (TSIN) Funded through Race to the Top through June 2014 TSIN serves as the state’s primary vehicle for aligning and coordinating STEM education policies, practices, and partners.

5 Vision: The West Tennessee STEM Collaboratory unites K-12, institutes of higher education (IHE), and STEM industry partners in an unprecedented approach to transforming STEM education and workforce opportunities throughout the region. The vision will be achieved through the establishment of a West Tennessee STEM Hub and STEM Platform School that will facilitate regional knowledge-sharing, research, and productive partnerships for supporting K-12 students and teachers in STEM.

6 Vision: The West TN STEM Hub will serve as a resource for West Tennessee to increase students’ interest in and preparedness for the STEM workforce through a variety of activities. Collaborative partnerships between STEM Hub, Platform School, and STEM community (K-16 faculty, industry, government) professionals will be the cornerstone of this effort.

7 Goals: To support the successful operation of the platform school at Southwind High To assemble and facilitate utilization of curricula aligned with state and common core standards that effectively engage K-12 students in STEM learning To create a sustainable culture of sharing and collaboration in the local and state STEM community through establishing productive partnerships

14 Innovations in K-20 STEM Education Conference  Goal: To create a ‘think tank’ environment that will generate ideas and transformative strategies to move West TN STEM education forward through collaborative effort from all stakeholders.  Each conference will feature discussions regarding: Innovations in STEM teaching and learning STEM pipeline issues STEM teacher preparation Legislative and policy implications for STEM education, and Opportunities for enhancing K-12 STEM education through Career and Technology programs  Next conference May 15, 2015 Next conference May 15, 2015
