4 Impact of alcohol use on intentional injury Nearly 10% of children in the EU live in families suffering under alcohol abuse. Alcohol is a cause child abuse in 16% of child abuse cases in Europe. Alcohol is a cause in 40% of all domestic violence cases in Europe. 19% of all homicides of children in Europe are due to alcohol.

5 Impact of alcohol use on unintentional injury 23% of all fatal road injuries of children ages 0 to 5 years are due to alcohol. Alcohol is involved in 30-50% of all adolescent and adult drowning. A study of teenage head-first diving with severe spinal injuries showed alcohol was a factor in nearly 50% of the cases. Research in Northern Ireland showed impairment due to alcohol is a factor in 80% of fatal house fires.

7 CHILD INTENTIONAL INJURY REPORT Assessment and benchmarking tool of policy action at national level Participation of 28 countries Includes evidenced based policies for maltreatment, peer to peer violence, suicide as well as alcohol policies.

9 Alcohol Policy Case Example - Finland Local Alcohol Policy Project PAKKA 2004-2007. Local cooperation model developed and implemented for the prevention of alcohol related harms with a focus on regulating the availability of alcoholic beverages. Results showed availability of alcohol to minors decreased in all regions. Decrease in actual sale and unofficial supply of alcohol to minors as well as licensed serving to persons under the influence of alcohol. Overall increase in the number of under age non- drinkers in Finland
