4 Yr 10-11 Curriculum structure Compulsory Core GCSE package of English, Mathematics, Science, ICT + Compulsory Core study in Religious Studies, Games and PSHEE Citizenship + Compulsory Design Technology (for most) but choice within it + Choices within an optional ‘Pathway’

5 Core opportunities ENGLISH: English Language for all, English Literature for majority ICT: 1,2, or 3 GCSE equivalents SCIENCE: Triple Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) or Double Science (2 GCSEs) or BTEC (2 GCSE equivalent) DESIGN TECHNOLOGY: Food Technology, Catering, Textiles, Graphic Products, Engineering, Resistant Materials, Art & Design, Fashion & Clothing

6 Four Pathways to success … Yellow Blue Green Orange

7 Blue Pathway (Level 2) Suitable for students who are achieving at least Level 5.5 and above in English, Maths and Science in Yr 9. All courses are delivered in school. Students choose 2 further GCSE subjects from: –Art, Business Studies, Drama, French, Geography, History, Media Studies, Music, Sport, Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award, –French AND Geography OR History are compulsory subjects for the English Baccalaureate

8 English Baccalaureate This is a new qualification. It isn’t a separate exam but an additional qualification. To achieve the English Baccalaureate, you must achieve grade C and above in English, Maths, Triple or Double Sciences, and for your options you must pick French and History or French and Geography. It may become an entry requirement to courses at 6 th form and beyond. If you are thinking of doing A levels or certain courses at University (such as Law, English or History) you should give serious consideration to doing the English Baccalaureate as it is likely to become a measure of academic success. An English Bacc pathway is suitable for students who are achieving L6 in English Maths and Science.

9 Yellow Pathway (Level 2) Suitable for students who are working consistently at Level 5 and above in Key Stage 3 Students study for the National Diploma worth 7.5 GCSEs. Diploma lines in ‘Business Administration and Finance’ or ‘Information Technology’ are delivered at this school, at Higher Level, in the new centres. The Diploma includes functional skills, work experience, an additional business qualification

10 Green Pathway (Level 1) Suitable for students who are achieving at Level 4 and below and who would benefit from a mixture of GCSEs and other qualifications. All courses are delivered in school. Students choose 2 further subjects from: –Art, Business Studies, Drama, Geography, History, Media Studies, Sport, Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award, Work Related Learning

11 Orange Pathway (Level 1) Suitable for those interested in combining traditional GCSEs with a vocational option. This Pathway allows students to study their core curriculum in English, Maths, Science and IT, and also complete other qualifications. Suitable for students working at Level 4 and below in Key Stage 3. Students study at other providers for 2 days each week. Students have to make their own way to the provider’s base

12 Vocational Opportunities Construction and the Built Environment (Powerwave Centre) Small Animal Care (Ladybridge Farm) Motor Vehicle (Training and Manpower in Salford, based in local garages) Hair and Beauty (Training for Today) Students have to complete an additional application form and be accepted onto the course by the external provider

13 Some general advice…. The different pathways have entry requirements and students will be advised about the suitability of the course they would like the school to consider for them. Students should gain as much information as possible from different sources Match future aspirations to the subjects and levels needed ( if any) Consider what would be a successful pathway for you, NOT your friend – it’s YOUR FUTURE! Complete the P2P preferences form accurately first time and hand it in on time!

14 WESTHOUGHTON HIGH SCHOOL A Specialist Technology College We try to meet everyone’s first preference but it is not always possible. Sometimes courses cannot run for a number of reasons. Sometimes people cannot go on a course because their ability or attitude does not make them a suitable candidate. There is still time to make a difference.

15 P2P at a glance Everyone has to do English, Maths, Science and ICT at GCSE. BLUE & YELLOW: stay in school, 2 option choices, will achieve 8-12 GCSEs GREEN: stay in school, 2 option choices will achieve 5-8 GCSEs ORANGE: 2 days out at local providers, will achieve 5 GCSEs plus vocational qualifications
