2 Who is a Health Science Teacher? Biology Teacher Chemistry Teacher FACS Teacher Health Teacher Physical Education Teacher Local Medical Experts (RN, MD, PT, EMT or Certified Professional)

3 New Courses & Competencies 1 st Year for NEW Courses Intro Level: Biology & Chemistry Technical Level: AP Biology, Nutrition Wellness, HIT, Physical Therapy, Pharmacology, Nursing 1, Biotechnology, etc… Application Level: Nursing 2, CNA, Sports Medicine 2, CMA, Biomedical Innovation, etc…

5 Teaching HS Classes New competencies have been developed for ALL classes in this pathway. Classes may require specialized teacher certification and/or offer professional certification. (Sports Medicine, EMT,CNA) There is no prescribed or required curriculum by the State or KSDE. This is a local option.

6 Teaching Resources Talk to other Health Science teachers across the state. Contact local post-secondary institutions and work with faculty. Use your advisory committee members and other professionals as speakers, knowledge in area and resources.

10 Professional Development Watch for more PD on listserv. Pittsburg State University is offering PD across the entire state through a CTE grant and support from other areas. Local post-secondary offer classes and training in your area. HS teachers present at CTE conferences.

11 Carl D. Perkins Grants Regular Perkins: Federal funds given to states and then distributed to districts to improve and update CTE. Perkins Reserve: Grants awarded by KSDE consultants to teachers & districts for projects, equipment & supply purchase, professional development, and more. Watch Listserv & Complete by June 30 th.

12 Health Science CTSO HOSA's mission is to promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. 13 National Consortium for Health Science Educators - NCHSE National organization for teachers. Kansas is a member state. National standards for health science. Kansas uses their assessment for all seniors who are concentrators in the HS pathway. 14 Activities & Events KU Night at the Lab – This program gives students the opportunity to research medical topics and create a visual display as well as an oral presentation. Together, the students will gain valuable experience in both research skills and professional presentation skills. 15 Activities & Events HOSA Fall Leadership Conference: (Oct 2 nd ) Washburn University Topeka, KS National HOSA Week: (Nov 1 st – 7 th ) CampMed - a day-long workshop with hands-on activities for high school students in grades 10- 12 interested in health care careers. KUAHEC Women in Health Care: (Nov 4-6) This weekend- long event gives eight high school junior and senior female students opportunities for hands- on. KUAHEC snutt@kumc.edusnutt@kumc.edu

16 Promote HS & CTE Post your activities and successes on the KS HS Teacher Facebook page with pictures of students and events. Display sponsors and advisory committee members information at events. Have students create write-ups about activities and events for school or local paper with pictures. Tell me about what you are doing!
