Info-Tech Research Group2 2 With the ever-quickening speed of business and continual invention of new ways to share information, the data landscape is constantly shifting, expanding, and evolving. Big data is no longer reserved for the largest corporations who have the money to throw at it. With the advances in cloud infrastructure and open- source technologies, operationalizing the next generation of data sources is more approachable and achievable than ever. By combining foundational education that cuts through the marketing jargon with detailed context for key business processes, your organization can seize a realizable opportunity to transform the way your business operates and create new value across several disciplines. CIOs and heads of information management who are planning on implementing big data projects. Business executives who are involved in strategic goal setting and decision making. Establish a holistic understanding of what big data entails, including challenges and benefits. Determine the organization’s big data maturity. Identify killer big data use cases and help you scope a pilot around those use cases. Build big data capabilities over time. Enterprise Architects, Data Architects, and Data Scientists who are instrumental to big data projects. Business analysts, project managers, and data analysts who are helping IT to execute the big data vision. Explore and scope identified use cases to define a pilot project. Create a plan to execute on the pilot project. Develop a repeatable pilot project framework to introduce big data to other domains.

Info-Tech Research Group4 4 Resolution Situation Complication Info-Tech Insight Executive summary The amount of data that is being produced and the speed of its availability presents new opportunities for competitive advantage. The desire for rapid decision making is increasing and the complexity of data sources is growing; business users want access to several new data sources, but in a way that is controlled and easily consumable. Organizations may understand the transformative potential of a big data initiative, but struggle to make the transition from the awareness of its importance to identifying a concrete use case for a pilot project. The big data ecosystem is crowded and confusing, and a lack of understanding of that ecosystem may cause a paralysis for organizations. Info-Tech will break down the elements of what big data entails and, more importantly, what it means for your organization as you move toward incorporating big data. Info-Tech will help you identify your current big data maturity level, as well as provide guidelines for assessing big data readiness from a data management perspective. Info-Tech will help you to holistically look at your industry, your business units, and your data to identify the killer big data use cases. Info-Tech provides detailed activities for setting up your big data pilot project for success and eventual enterprise-wide adoption. 1.Big data is simply data. With technological advances, what was once considered big data is now more approachable for all organizations. 2.The variety element is the key to unlocking big data value. Drill down into your specific use cases more effectively by focusing on what kind and source of data you should use. 3.Big data is about deep analytics. Deep doesn’t mean difficult. Visualization of data, integrating new data, and understanding associations are ways to “deepen” your analytics.

Info-Tech Research Group5 5 Leverage Big Data by Starting Small – Insight Breakdown Big data is becoming everyday data; tackle it by starting small. Get the most out of big data by leveraging the different varieties of emerging data sources. Big data is approachable only when you understand what it is and how to leverage it. Educate key IT and business executives on big data before scoping a big data project. Also, revisit the executive education when there are confusions and disagreements along the way. Don’t jump into a big data initiative without knowing your readiness. Assess readiness by knowing your maturity and data issues. Apply conventional data management practices to ensure the veracity of your big data. Then the end users can trust the data and your big data will succeed. Stop “boiling the ocean” when you decide to leverage new data sources. Identify the killer use cases and focus on the variety (what type) of data you should use to maximize the value to effort ratio and make sure the use cases are successful. Develop a repeatable big data project framework to reduce time to pilot so that you can execute more big data pilot projects to help more business units. The pilot framework plans for pilot resourcing, big data architecture, and big data promotion in a streamlined fashion. Manifesto of the insights: Disney introduced the “MagicBand,” a wristband that stores and tracks customers’ activities in Disneyland. Disney rolled it out in phases and integrated the activity data with a variety of data sources such as social media, photos, and blogs.

Info-Tech Research Group6 6 Data – the core of all decision-making In a world that moves faster than ever, organizations rely heavily on obtaining game-changing insights that will provide unparalleled customer experiences, streamline operational processes, and accelerate new product development. At this point in time, the question is no longer a matter of if companies are using data as a decision-making tool, but a matter of how effectively it is being leveraged and how strong the practices around maintaining data as a business asset are. Though intuition and level of experience still play a key role in decision making, organizations are seeking data-driven insights as the most important driver to clearly establish a competitive advantage. Organizations that use data analysis heavily and are incorporating big data are 10% more productive than organizations that are not engaged in these activities. Source: Nesta, 2015

Info-Tech Research Group7 7 The data expansion of the last half-decade is showing no signs of slowing down 40 6 Zettabytes of data generated or processed in 2014. Zettabytes of data expected to be generated or processed by 2020. Rapid development of new data sources and drastic reduction in the cost of storage have allowed for an explosive expansion in the amount of data that is available. Big data = Bigger opportunities This continued growth in data, in variety, velocity, and volume, will force organizations to find better ways of accommodating and leveraging data in order to stay competitive in today’s market. The dramatic increase in the amount of unstructured, file-based data has far outpaced data stored in formal, table-based formats. 90% of data that exists today has been created in the last two years alone. 8 Info-Tech Research Group8 8 What is the essence of big data? THEN… Big data originally referred to sets of data so large that traditional processing infrastructure was not able to accommodate it. A more contemporary definition of big data incorporates the 4 Vs (volume, velocity, veracity, and variety) as the key factors that differentiate how big data is handled compared to traditional data assets. NOW. Big data, in many ways, is simply data. The revolutionary aspect of it lies in the numerous combinations of data sources and analytical tools that can be used to uncover insights. Big data is extending BI and analytical capabilities. You can now get insights out of a greater volume of data and different types of data. – Lynn Langit Big Data and Cloud Architect; Technical Author

Info-Tech Research Group10Info-Tech Research Group10 Before embarking on big data initiatives, demystify the truth There are several misconceptions about what big data entails. Take time to dispel some of the more common myths that Info-Tech has come across: Big data is an unmanageable undertaking… Big data is an IT problem… Big data infrastructure replaces data warehouses… Hiring expensive data scientists is a necessity to succeed… Big data projects don’t have to be expensive and huge. In fact, many organizations just focus on data variety and leverage those emerging data sources. Busted Big data is enabled by IT and is often reliant on emerging technologies. However, the ideas should come from the business. Busted Big data complements data warehousing. It allows you to analyze data sources that may be outside of your “internal data” warehouse. Busted A data scientist might be needed for MapReduce, and machine learning programming, but they are not an absolute must-have to get value out of big data. Busted

Info-Tech Research Group11Info-Tech Research Group11 A big data initiative supports any of the three focal aspects of competitive advantage Companies that have taken leadership positions in their industries in the last decade typically have done so by narrowing their business focus, not broadening it. They have focused on delivering superior customer value in line with one of three value disciplines – operational excellence, customer intimacy, or product leadership. -Treacy & Wiersema, HBR, 1993 Pinpointing the right big data use case can drive outcomes within each of these areas. 1. Customer Intimacy 3. Operational Excellence 2. Product Leadership Industry Leader Industry Competent Customer Satisfaction Revenue Growth Customer Segmentation Brand Loyalty Continual Process Improvement New Market Share Acquisition Expansion of Product Offering Cost Savings Risk Management
