12. Conflict Prior the story Fortunato insulted Montresor many times, and he plans his revenge against Fortunato within the catacombs beneath his palazzo. Montresor takes him through several suites of rooms to the archway that led into to the vaults; there are insufferable damp, and encrusted with nitre. Montresor had a trowel; it was the aid for his plan. He scarcely laid the first tier of the masonry when he discovered the intoxication of Fortunato; he was too much astounded to resist. Montresor laid the second, the third and the fourth tier.

At this point, Montresor was impatient and called Fortunato multiple times, but Fortunato didn’t reply, because he was dead. Montresor end his labor and declares: “for the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them anymore. “In pace requiescat!”
