4 Plot of The Cask of Amontillado “I had borne as I best I could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge”. Montresor Montresor meets Fortunato in a carnival and he plans a revenge, because Fortunato causes him a thousand of insult and injuries. Montresor succeeds behind friendship and courtesy. He takes Fortunato to the vaults, into the catacombs to carry out his plan.

6 Setting It was about dusk, one evening, in some place in Italy; during the supreme madness of the carnival season. But most of the story takes place in the catacombs, under the Palazzo. – Carnival – Catacombs – Palazzo

7 Carnival Is the huge Italy’s winter festivals that are celebrated around the country with parades, masquerade balls, entertainment, music and parties. During those celebrations everything was allowed, even disguising and change of rules.

9 Catacombs Usually, catacombs is an underground cemetery, especially one consisting of tunnels and rooms with recesses dug out for coffins and tombs. Subterranean burial chambers of the early Christians in and near Rome, Italy.

10 Palazzo An impressive public building or private residence. The official residence of a reigning monarch or member of a royal family: king, queen, bishop; or other sovereign or exalted personage.

12 Conflict Prior the story Fortunato insulted Montresor many times, and he plans his revenge against Fortunato within the catacombs beneath his palazzo. Montresor takes him through several suites of rooms to the archway that led into to the vaults; there are insufferable damp, and encrusted with nitre. Montresor gives to Fortunato wine has made him cough a lot.

13 Conflict (Cont.) When Montresor realized Fortunato gets worst, he ask to go back, but Fortunato wants to keep going. Then, Montresor unexpectedly chains Fortunato to the wall. Montresor had a trowel; it was the aid for his plan. He scarcely laid the first tier of the masonry when he discovered the intoxication of Fortunato; he was too much astounded to resist. Montresor laid the second, the third and the fourth tier.

14 Conflict (Cont.) It was midnight, and the Montresor task was to close; he had completed the tiers. Montresor mocks Fortunato as he yells; and ever felt more satisfaction. At this point, Montresor was impatient and called Fortunato multiple times, but Fortunato didn’t reply, because he was dead. Montresor end his labor and declares: “for the half of a century no mortal has disturbed them anymore. “In pace requiescat!”

15 Nitre: A potassium nitrate substance, saltpeter, properly “natron”, rising from the bottom of the Lake Natron in Egypt. Nitre is encrusted on ancient jars. Trowel: A tool having a flat blade with a handle, used for depositing and working mortar, plaster, etc.

17 Theme The power of the deception of Montresor created in him a desire for revenge against Fortunato. It is a gothic story, in a macabre setting: dead bodies, underground passageways, it takes place at night (it makes more sinister). The narrator's perspective is full of vengeance, with a mentally disturbed and a tormented soul. The narrator shows a pathetic and ironic attitude with some symbolic phrases.
