1 Main Idea – Part II

2 Topic: Main Idea: You get along great. You’ve always enjoyed hanging out, watching your favorite T.V. shows together, shopping, and having someone there to give you advice about relationships 24/7. What you didn’t expect was that while you love to get advice, you don’t always want it. It’s one thing if you ask for it; but, when she gives it to you freely, all the time, it starts to sound like she’s criticizing your every decision. And, while I love cooking dinner together, I hate that she leaves her dishes in the sink and doesn’t even offer to help wash them… even though I cooked the dinner for the night. She thinks since I cooked it, I should clean it. I cooked it for us! You’re getting your first apartment with your best friend. You know her habits; she knows yours.. One time I invited one of my other friends over who I hadn’t spent time with in a long while. I didn’t invite her along because my friend and I hadn’t spent any quality time together lately. My best friend was irate. She felt hurt and left out. Living with your best friend And, while I love spending time with her, sometimes I just want to be alone, rest, and read a good book. But when she asks me to go out and shop or jog or do something, when I’m relaxing, she’s gets offended and thinks I’m being mean and avoiding her. While living with your best friend sounds like a good idea, it could ruin your friendship.

4 Topic : Main Idea : Earthquakes have often shaken the city of San Francisco. Many people remember it best because it halted the San Francisco- Oakland World Series for 12 days while damages were repaired. Earthquakes Earthquakes have often shaken the city of San Francisco. In 1906, when it was a new and booming town, it was nearly destroyed by an earthquake that measured 8.6 on the Richter scale. Over 400 people were killed and 28,000 buildings reduced to rubble. A less severe earthquake struck the city in 1989. It did far less damage and claimed only 67 lives.

23 Carnations come in a variety of lovely shades of pink, red, orange, and yellow. Their ruffled petals give them a pert and pretty shape. Their fresh, clean scent lasts a long time and gives a pleasant aroma to an entire room. Carnations are strong and hardy and will last a long time in water after they are picked. They do not droop, but stand straight and tall on their dark green stems. All these qualities make carnations perfect flowers for vases. Use the paragraph on Carnations from your pretest to create a Power Thinking outline.

30 There are a lot of fast animals in the animal kingdom. Swiftness is a good way to catch something to eat- but it is even more important as a way to keep from being eaten. The fastest insect is the dragonfly, which can fly 36 miles an hour. The fastest marine mammal is actually the largest, the blue whale. It clocks in at 30 miles an hour. But the fastest fish goes over twice as fast. The sailfish can swim an astonishing 68 miles an hour. That’s just 2 miles an hour slower than the fastest land mammal, the cheetah. Cheetahs can run 70 miles an hour-but only for short distances. The fastest animal of all is a bird. The peregrine falcon has been known to fly an incredible 200 miles an hour!
