2 Falls – a common problem It’s estimated that 35% of people over the age of 65 will fall each year This increases to 45% for those aged over 80 Improving care, delivering quality

3 Falls – the human cost Direct physical and psychological injury Fear of falling and activity limitation Reduced social participation and quality of life Increased dependence Death – over 4,200 elderly people suffer hip fractures in Wales each year - 7% die within a month of their injury Improving care, delivering quality

4 Falls – the financial cost Treating hip fractures - c £12,000 per patient x 4,200 = £50.4 million A 15% reduction equates to a cost of c£7.5million a year Medical and social for the first two years following a hip fracture = £13,000, lifetime cost = £64,000 Improving care, delivering quality
