1 Quality of Homework “Homework is important because it is at the intersection between home and school. It serves as a window through which you can observe your children’s education and express positive attitudes towards your children and their education”. Dr. Sam Goldstein Dr. Sydney Zentall

2 Practical Ways to Help 1. Provide a quiet environment Provide a quiet, well lit area. Avoid distractions such as the television and loud music. Encourage other family members to be quiet. 2. Have a Regular Homework Routine We appreciate household routines differ and children may need to be flexible if they attend outside activities but It is important to get a balance, If it is being rushed and this is seen as acceptable then what message are we sending to children about expectations? 3. Praise Effort and Achievement It is vital to praise a child for his or her efforts and achievements. Positive comments are more effective than critical ones. Building self-esteem is very important if a child is to try with school work. 4. Show an Interest Make time to talk about school in daily conversations.

3 Practical Ways to Help 5. Provide Equipment Ensure your child has basic equipment such as pens, pencils, a ruler, erasers, a dictionary. We often see titles and lines drawn without using a ruler. 6. Set a Good Example Children's attitudes to homework are mainly influenced by their parents' guidance and examples. They are more likely to want to complete work if this is seen as important by yourselves. 7. Monitor Homework How closely children need to be monitored is dependent on several factors: - the age of the child - how able your child is academically - how independently your child is able to work It is a good idea to check homework over. It is important to remember that the homework is not yours, but your child's. If you do their work for them it is preventing them from becoming an independent learner.

4 We hope you enjoy viewing the good examples of homework from throughout the school. These are pieces taken from a range of different ability levels. If you need any advice or support with homework then please speak to your child’s class teacher during your consultation meeting. We are here to help
