Objectives Content Objective: I can understand how authors use both direct and indirect characterization. Language Objective: I can use S.T.E.A.L. to describe a character.

Key Questions ●What is characterization? ●What is a character trait? ●How do we understand and describe character? ●Why is it important to understand character?

Character Traits Characterization: details about a character that make up who he or she is. These details are called character traits. They are aspects of a character’s personality.

How Do We Understand Character? There are two ways that authors use to describe character: ●Direct Characterization: the narrator of the story TELLS the reader about the character directly. ●Indirect Characterization: the author SHOWS the reader details about the character through her looks, speech, actions, and interactions with other characters.

For Example: “He’s good-looking, he’s strong enough to handle the work in the mines, and he can hunt. You can tell by the way the girls whisper about him when he walks by in school that they want him.” - Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games

For Example: “I reach her just as she is about to mount the steps. With one sweep of my arm, I push her behind me. “I volunteer!” I gasp. “I volunteer as tribute!” Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games

Indirect Characterization:

S: Speech Questions: What does the character say out loud? What kind of speech does he or she use?

T: Thoughts Questions: What does the character think about? Does he or she think about some things more than others?

E: Effect on Others Questions: How does the main character make others feel? How do other characters change when they are around him or her?

A: Actions Questions: What does the main character do?

L: Looks Questions: What does the main character look like? How does he or she dress?

Find three examples of direct characterization and two examples of indirect characterization in the video. Write them down in your expert notebooks and we will share after the video!

Warm-Up

Objectives Content Objective: I can understand how author's use both direct and indirect characterization. Language Objective: I can use S.T.E.A.L. to describe a character.

Analyzing a Poem We will read through the poem "JB and I," by Kwame Alexander. After we read, you will add at least five annotations. Once you have completed your annotations, you will complete the Venn diagram to compare and contrast Josh and JB.

Analyzing a Poem For each detail from the poem, make sure to indicate which part of STEAL it belongs to.

Warm-Up: Complete the “JB and I” sheet, including the description of Josh with three pieces of evidence. When you receive your character trait, start brainstorming: what would a person with that trait be like?

Objectives Content Objective: I can describe a character and support my description with evidence. I can understand how to describe a character indirectly. Language Objective: I can give an adjective to describe a character and provide support from a poem. I can write a description of a character to show a specific character trait.

Characterization Activity You will receive a character trait written on a piece of paper. You will brainstorm a character who has that trait, and then fill in what he or she would say, think, do, and look like, and how he or she would affect others. You will write a written description of the character, but you MUST NOT use the character trait in your description! Keep your trait a secret from everyone except your shoulder partner!

Trait: Frustrated “Get out of my way!” “I don’t have time for this!” I can’t BELIEVE this is taking SO LONG. The other people in line stare with annoyed expressions. They roll their eyes. One brave man asks the character to calm down. Yelling, sighing loudly, tapping foot Frowning, arms crossed

Written Description A woman stood in line at the DMV. Her arms were crossed, and she was frowning intensely. Her foot began tapping sharply on the linoleum floor. Suddenly, she sighed loudly. “I don’t have time for this,” she said with a snarl. The other customers began to stare with annoyed expressions. Some rolled their eyes. The woman began to push the others out of line. “Get OUT of my way!” she yelled. One young man approached her nervously. “Uh, ma’am?” he said meekly. Can you please calm down?”

Objectives Content Objective: I can describe a character and support my description with evidence. Language Objective: I can give an adjective to describe a character and provide support from a passage or short story.

Passage Activity Place your descriptive passage on your desk. Below the passage, draw a t-chart. We will rotate four times. When the music plays, you will move to a desk that is not next to yours. When you arrive, you will have three minutes to read the passage, decide which trait the author is representing, and write at least one piece of evidence in the t-chart.
