Moving forward responsibly Make the switch to bus and coach

Moving forward Responsibly Every day across Europe millions of people rely on PT to get them to: Buses, trains, ferries are essential services operated by people who live in the communities they serve. work schoolcollegefriendsfamily public services go shopping have fun

social impact our impact falls under four main themes: 1.Safety – how we minimise risk for our passengers and employees 2.Community – how we play an active role in the areas in which we work 3.People – how we work to engage and empower the people running our services 4.Environment – how we measure and mitigate the impact of our operations

Greenhouse gas footprint In 2008 Arriva set itself a challenge of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions footprint by 15 per cent, like-for-like, from the 2006 level, by 2012.

Greenhouse gas footprint 2 In 2008 the greenhouse gas emissions attributable to Arriva’s business operations amounted to 1.488.878 tonnes CO 2, an increase in absolute terms of 438.880 tonnes CO 2 on 2007, due to additional services run in UK, Spain, Hungary and Slovakia.

Alternative fuels ARRIVA LONDON: hybrid double decker + parallel hybrid systems COPENHAGHEN: electric buses GERMANY: trains 100% biodiesel + B100 biodiesel PORTUGAL: 240 buses uses B30 biodiesel SWEDEN: bio-gas produced by a landfill facility SCANDINAVIA: compressed natural gas (CNG) + liquid propane gas (LPG) THE NETHERLANDS: bio-methane gas generated from sewage waste STOCKHOLM: E95 bio-ethanol derived from sugar cane, other crops and waste wood cellulose CZECH REPUBLIC: compressed natural gas ITALY: diesel with 10% water (Gecam); this reduces particulate emissions over 50 per cent, nitrogen oxides by five to six and carbon monoxide over 30 per cent. DUTCH REGION: gas produced from domestic waste + CNG

It’s a virtuous circle More people are encouraged to use buses Reduced congestion on roads helps smoothness operation of PT PT increases its attractiveness

United Kingdom approach

Go Green Campaign The “Go Green” campaign has been adopted by Arriva as one of the biggest global efforts for the climate change.

Arriva London London buses are all run under contract for Transport for London - TfL. TfL is really pro-active in looking at new technology for buses less harmful for the environment

Arriva London Arriva work with TfL as a partner, having trialled the first hybrid double deck bus. Now operate 11 of these.

Working together “Green Journeys” is a campaign encouraging people to get out of their cars and onto buses and coaches; a quick and cost-effective way to reduce carbon emissions. It has been supported by these five major coach operators:

The big idea Greener Journeys is a UK Bus & Coach Industry campaign encouraging people all around the UK to switch from cars to buses and coaches: we want to take one billion car journeys off the road in just three years we want to do it by forming stronger partnerships between local authorities and operators, widespread application of policies supporting bus and coach travel making a huge contribution to the Government’s carbon reduction targets

Growing awareness The growing awareness was illustrated in a 2008 survey of almost 20.000 bus passengers in United Kingdom: 34% are becoming more concerned about environment Of these 69% are planning to or have already switched some of their journeys from car to bus and train 28% of people think that public transport will be used more in the future.

Researchers demonstrate that 1/5 of motorists find driving increasingly stressful. A further fifth of motorists have already reduced their car use and would make further reductions if travelling by public transport is made easier. The will to change

To succeed in ONE BILLION Challenge, here are some small changes that can make a big impact: Small changes. Big difference.

1journey in 25 Switching from car to bus for 1 journey in 25 could save 2 million tonnes of CO 2 That would mean one billion fewer car journeys on our roads … … 50% more CO 2 savings from transport than planned by the Government … And it could be achieved in just three years if everyone played their part

Changing travel behaviour can make a real difference

Environmental champions Encouraging people to travel collectively by bus and coach can help reduce our negative impact on the environment considerably. According to the American Union of Concerned Scientists, when travelling by bus or coach, your carbon footprint is the smallest of all transport modes. UK data shows that coaches emit 0.03 kg of CO2 per passenger-kilometre. This is half that of trains and radically smaller than the amount emitted by cars (0.11) and airplanes (0.18). Public transport for cleaner mobility!

Buses and coaches are the cleanest and most carbon-efficient mode of travel. Let’s not keep this a secret anymore! EXAMPLE A passenger journey: London to Blackpool (385 km) in the UK will emit: - 11 kg CO 2 if done by coach, - 23-25 kg if done by train, - 44 kg if done by car and - 68kg if done by air. If every bus in the UK took just one more car driver as a passenger, up to 1.2 million tonnes of CO 2 emissions per year could be saved.

Dedicated internet website and contacts www.greener-journeys.com Information dissemination

Dedicated printed information Information dissemination

Press coverage continuative activity + cooperation with partners: “In an unprecedented joint call for action, bus and coach operators will stress that technological advances alone are not enough to achieve the carbon reductions required to tackle climate change and modal shift must be a priority.” Information dissemination

The EcoManager

The way buses and trains are driven has a big impact on fuel consumption. Passenger research also points to improved customer satisfaction as a result of smoother acceleration and braking. The bespoke system known as EcoManager, combined with driver training, is helping our drivers to improve fuel efficiency.

The Eco Manager At the end of 2009 there will be a Eco-Manager on each of all 2.000 vehicles in UK. Equivalent technology is in use in trains in Bavaria and in buses in Portugal. In 2010 it will be introduced in 150 buses in Italy – Provincia di Torino network.

What we have asked drivers to do? To become a Eco Driver? Economical driving through forward planning Avoid over-revving the engine Avoid unnecessary braking and stopping Switch engines off when you can Smooth use of the vehicle controls

What we have asked drivers to do? Be aware of the Drivers Aid on the dashboard. Occasionally glance to see the status of the LEDs Try to keep the LEDs in the green. Lighting the Red LEDs means fuel is being wasted. Keep it Green - Keep it Clean!

What have we done? Preparation – AWARENESS1hour driver group presentations PHASE 1 – 1:1 MEETINGS1hour manager discussions PHASE 2 – INSTRUCTOR Half day instructor training PHASE 3 – REVIEWS Targeted training

Project Eco - Results Following on from our awareness campaign every driver is now aware of Eco Manager and what we are trying to achieve which is Increase fuel efficiency/reduce CO2 Reduce maintenance costs Reduce accident rates Improve passenger comfort Reduce driver stress

Benefits Improve fuel consumption Protect Industry, Company Brand and Image Reduce environmental pollution Protect Livelihood Reduce vehicle downtime and costs Enhance road safety Reduce stress and fatigue

Winner of innovation award 2009 The project between Arriva and Merseytravel has won the Innovation Award at the 2009 UK Bus Awards. “One of the most rewarding things about EcoManager has been the enthusiastic way it has been embraced by drivers” “ EcoManager delivers clean environmental benefits and helps us demonstrate to customers how they can do their bit by switching more journeys to public transport ”

Thank you for your attention
