Insight Therapies Psychoanalytic and Humanistic approaches Psychoanalysis – open a window into the unconscious in order to understand the causes of the problem. Tools – free association and dreams help release unconscious thoughts. Another tool to uncover thoughts is transference – shifting thoughts and feelings onto the therapist.

Cont. Insight Therapies Humanistic – the person is treated as a client rather than a patient. Client-centered therapy – Carl Rogers, the client is helped to realize their full potential and the therapist is open, honest, and expresses their feelings. Unconditional positive regard Accurate empathetic understanding

Behavioral Therapy Short term where the problem is treated since there is no underlying reason. Counterconditionin g – a response to a particular stimulus is replaced by another response Aversion therapy, Systematic desensitization Extinction procedures- to weaken maladaptive responses Implosion – client imagines the disruptive stimuli rather than confronting them Modeling good, rewarded behavior

Cognitive Therapy Relies on changing cognitions or the way people think about things. Rational-Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)- change maladaptive thoughts in order to change maladaptive responses. Cognitive therapy – Aaron Beck, focus is to eliminate maladaptive schemas.

Biological Therapies Electroconvulsive therapy- temporary amnesia Prefrontal lobotomy – parts of the frontal lobe are cut off. Psychopharmacolog y –drugs Antidepressants

Modes of Therapy Group therapy 12-step programs (AA) Couples or family Therapy All to provide insight, opinions, and support Community and Preventative Approaches - Primary prevention – preventing disorders from occuring in the first place. - Secondary prevention – detecting problems early. - Tertiary prevention – treating existing disorders and preventing them from getting worse.
