1 Adriana Rossi BE/ABP on behalf of the collimation project (BE/ABP-EN/STI-TE/VSC-EN/ACE) Adriana Rossi BE/ABP on behalf of the collimation project (BE/ABP-EN/STI-TE/VSC-EN/ACE) S. Redaelli, LMC, 10- 02-2016 Introduction 1 “5 th motor axis” functionality: Moving transversally the whole tank by ±10mm to offer “fresh surface” in case of beam impacts. “5 th ” as it comes in addition to the 4 jaw motors. Available for all collimator orientations (H, V, S). IR3/IR7: primary and secondary collimators equipped with 5 th motor for remote control. Other collimators: manual movement. Run I operational experience emphasized the important role of tertiary collimator robustness for the β* at the LHC.

Redaelli, LMC, 10- 02-2016 Proposed solution 3 Integration worked out a solution that allows - to recover the 5 th axis functionality for TCTPH/TCL; (horizontal plane most relevant for asynch dump) - to partially recover it for the TCTPV (half stroke); (could not fully solve the conflicts with other beam pipe) - to sectorize the TAN-D2 regions around IR1. Compatible with presently schedules 2015 beam stop. We also propose to add motors for the remote control. Detailed scope of proposed layout change: - reducing outgoing beam pipe diameter; - adding longer bellows that absorb transverse stoke of collimator tank; - adding sectorization valves (like is the case already for IR5); - applying small longitudinal shifts of components, manufacturing of new transition pieces.

Tolerances 1-2mm min. – In 3 out of 4 locations some contact between the cooling tube of the VERTICAL collimator and the parallel chambers or some misalignment due to loss of fiducialisation of modules necessitated additional work from the vacuum side – Aperture been checked after SURVEY measurements are completed 5 th axis movement – Commissioned OK for all HORIZONTAL TCT collimators – Half movement (inwards) for vertical TCT collimators due to contact or proximity of parallel beam chamber – OK for all TCL that have been commissioned, one problem at 4L1 due to a QRL protection left in place.

Vacuum chambers connected without interference or contact. TCTPH 5 th axis movement OK. To be baked-out Generally worked, TCTPV and TCL movement to be tested

A modification of the cryo shield and the collimator cable support was necessary to allow the installation and the alignment. For the installation in LS1, in March 2014, the decision was taken not to install these protections (Integration was then not done at the time)

Impossible to install in some locations with collimator in place Accessibility of switches and motorisation strongly reduced Future manutention of the collimator in 4L1 has to be re- addressed (see email) Alternative safety procedure and equipment to be developed
