2 E- learning is commonly referred to the international use of Networks information and communication technology in teaching and learning. E- learning is becoming a dominant delivery method in workplace-learning settings across organisaions of various sectors and of varying sizes. It uses technology to create, deliver and facilitate instruction any time and anywhere. It not only teaches, but provides evaluation tools, helps employees adapt to new needs and if necessary, catch up with the skills and knowledge requirements.

3 E- learning is essentially education via electronic network in which content is transferred via the Internet, Intranet, extranet, audio/video tapes, animation and virtual environments. E- learning allows to learn any where and usually at any time, as long as you, have a properly configured computer.

4 Types of E- Learning  Purely on-line learning.  Instructor-led web based learning.  Face to face learning.  Synchronous.  Asynchronous.

7 Advantages of E- Learning It is developed according to the demands of the learners. It is developed according to the demands of the learners.  Time and geographical barriers are eliminated.  Large number of people all over the world can have an easy access.  Unbiased education.  Updation of courses.

8 Limitations of E- Learning  No eye contact.  Lack of moral values.  Frequent use of computer user face of health risk like obesity and eye diseases etc.  Sometimes failure of Internet connections.  Interruption in power supply.

9 Networks of E- Learning  EDUCAUSE centre for applied research is a non profit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of IT.  EDEN- European distance and e-learning networks (1991) is an international educational association open to institutions and individuals dealing with E-learning, open and distance learning related to higher education Cont.

10 Networks of E- Learning  VIDYAVAHINI Proposing to connect 60,000 govt. funded senior second schools through Internet and Intranet.  BHARTVIDYA- developed by NCERT curriculum specific, multimedia based computer aided teaching software. Cont.

11 Networks of E- Learning  EDUSAT (Education Satellite) an initiative of Indian space research organization (ISRO) 2004 for providing e-learning facilities to secondary and higher education institution (For both private & Govt.)  I2L- developed by Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) for providing Internet based interactive learning for students to learn at their own pace.

12 Networks of E- Learning  Web based Intelligent Interactive tutor (Web IIT) is a website based curriculum that offers online Engineering courses sponsored by (DIT) ministry of communication and information technology, Govt. of India.  IC3- on August, 2005, the NASSCOM, President launched a new E-learning initiative Internet and Computing core certification on reliance web world plat form. More than 47,000 Ic3 exams are administered each month through more 9,000 certified testing centers in 114 countries and 18 languages.

13 Networks of E- Learning  INFLIBNET centre is an autonomous inter university centre of UGC. It is monitoring agency in UGC infonet project.

14 E- CONSORTIAS IN INDIA INFLIBNET- Information and Library Network Centre It was established by UGC for 149 Universities to provide campus wide networking with state of the art ICT and to help the users to access the Internet on higher bandwidth ranges from 512 Kbps to 10 Mbps. In the near future even Affiliated colleges will be provided the same infrastructure for better access to Networked Environment. 15 E- CONSORTIAS IN INDIA Indian academics are lucky enough to have access to two major consortium UGC-INFONET and INDEST AICTE. UGC-INFONET : Under this programme, Indian universities are getting access to more than 4500 journals and some databases of around 23 publishers. The most remarkable thing about this ambitious programme is that there is no financial burden on the universities

16 CSIR e-JOURNAL CONSORTIUM It is a project implemented by National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources (NISCAIR) (earlier called INSDOC – Indian National Science Documentation Centre). It provides access to more than 4500 scholarly journals and databases to the scientists and researchers working in CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) laboratories all over the country.

17 INDEST INDIAN NATIONAL DIGITAL LIBRARY IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY The Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) has set up the “Indian National Digital Library in Sciences and Technology” (INDEST) consortium in 2003. The ministry provides funds required for the subscription to electronic resources for academic institutions, including the Indian Institute of Science, IITs, Regional Engineering Colleges, IIMs and central funded /aided government institutions through the consortium and now private academic institutions can also become part of it.

20 CONCLUSION E- learning has created a new dimension in education, both within and beyond the curriculum. The power of e-learning lies in its potential to provide the right information to the right people at the right place. Technology advancements will continue to reshape learning over the Internet with increasing uses of streaming TV, Quality Videos, and Stimulation based e-learning.
