2 Did you know? According to the centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Center for Health Statistics, and the Office of the Surgeon General of The United States: Adults 18 and older need 30 minutes of physical activity on five or more days a week to be healthy. But only 3 in 10 adults get the recommended amount of physical activity.

3 I think that… Everyone needs to exercise and anyone can learn to make time and find physical activities they enjoy.

4 Thesis In order to live a long healthy life everyone needs to exercise and by changing daily routines and habits, in addition to finding alternatives to traditional exercise and utilizing ones resources, anyone can make time for exercise.

5 Credibility All of my life I have been very active Going to the gym is part of my daily routine Fitness is part of my lifestyle. I think that everyone in here needs to be physically active to maintain their physical and mental health. I want you all to be healthy and live long lives.

6 Exercising can be…  Time consuming  Expensive  Unenjoyable But… I am here to change your mind about exercise and hopefully help you discover a way you can make time for exercise you will enjoy.

7 What we will discuss: Why everyone needs to exercise to live a long healthy life. How to change your routine and habits to make time for exercise. Alternative ways to exercise and resources available for people to take advantage of.

8 Why do we need exercise? Not only does exercise help control your weight Exercise can help prevent or delay the onset of  chronic diseases, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. If you already have these health issues… The National Institute of health says, “Exercise can help improve your condition.”

9 Mental Benefits According to The National Center for Health Statistics and the Mayo Clinic “Daily physical activity helps reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.” The Mayo Clinic also claims: Exercise has direct stress-reducing benefits  Releases endorphins  Calming effects  Improves your mood  Boosts energy  Boosts self-esteem  Improves sleep

10 BOTTOM LINE! Physical fitness is key to helping you live a long healthy life both physically and mentally. Now lets discuss little changes you can make to allow physical fitness to become part of your daily life.

11 Don’t have time?- Find ways to move all day long Wake up half an hour earlier, schedule lunchtime workouts, take an evening fitness class Make family time physically active Build physical activity into your routine chores Squeeze in short walks throughout the day. Drive less, walk more. Revamp your rituals.  Saturday mornings- make it a ritual to go bike riding with your best friend

12 Get off the couch Watch less TV- replace it with physical activity Go for a walk outside Talk on the phone while walking Get off the internet and go outside

13 Change your Perception of Exercise View exercise as a necessity not a chore View your workout time as “me time.”  Your workout time may be the only quiet time you get Think of exercise as your energy source  Exercise can actually give you more energy and focus Exercise.about.com

14 Exercise Alternatives Dance Classes Run a Marathon for a good cause Pole Dancing (type of exercise class) Swimming Group sports Clubs Bike Riding Hiking Canoe Jump Rope

15 Party yourself into shape Zumba “Ditch the Workout Join the Party.”

16 Now we know… Why we need to exercise, ways to make time for exercise and some fun ways to stay in shape. Last, we will discuss fitness resources available to you.

17 Resource for all UT Students We all get a free membership to the TRECS when we are enrolled in classes– This will probably be the only time in our lives we have a free gym membership
