DLESE DATA SERVICES: FACILITATING THE DEVELOPMENT AND EFFECTIVE USE OF EARTH SYSTEM SCIENCE DATA IN EDUCATION Tamara Shapiro Ledley Ben Domenico, Michael Taber LuAnn Dahlman

DLESE Data Services Goals Identify the Earth science data needs and interests of educators at all levels Actively identify educational modules using Earth science datasets and tools, and make them accessible to educators via DLESE Facilitate the interaction of data providers, developers of data access and analysis tools, and curriculum developers in order to assure that Earth system science datasets and tools are accessible and usable by educators are used in the development of Earth system science educational modules and educational modules are available via DLESE.

Major Activities Re-start the Data Access Working Group (DAWG) Needs Assessment for Earth science data and data analysis tools Identify existing educational modules utilizing data Workshops: Bring together dataset providers and educators to improve the use of data in education Community Wide Workshops Strategic Partnerships Project Specific Workshops

Data Access Working Group (DAWG) DAWG is an advisory group for the effective incorporation of Earth Science data into DLESE and thus into education 1 st meeting to be held Nov 17-18, 2003 Subsequent meeting held in conjunction with the DLESE Data Services Workshops (May 28, 2004, spring 2005, winter 2006)

Data Access Working Group (DAWG) 1 st Meeting Goals Review working of group and select permanent chair Review and revise recommendations of first DAWG meeting (February 2001) and the Developers Workshop Provide recommendations for DLESE Data Services strategic partners

Earth Science Data Needs Assessment Purpose: to determine the pedagogical needs of educators for Earth science datasets and data analysis tools Conduct a needs assessment and survey to determine the Earth science data needs and interests of educators at all levels. Currently formulating needs assessment

Identification of Existing Educational Modules Using Data Identification of existing educational modules utilizing Earth science datasets and data analysis tools that are used by the educational community through Needs Assessment Survey Polls at teacher workshops at teacher professional development meetings Graduate Assistant “Data Hounds” who actively search for data resources Data Hounds will help us learn about the process of searching for data…to lead to a white paper recommending how to develop an “expert system” for data searches

DLESE Data Services Workshops Community Wide Workshop Bring together a wide range of Earth science data providers, developers of data access and analysis/exploration tools Curriculum developers and educators Leverage Strategic Partnerships 1 st DDS Workshop – May 24-27, 2004 at the New England Center, University of New Hampshire Subsequent DDS Workshops scheduled for spring 2005 in Boulder, CO and winter 2006 southwest US Project Specific Workshops

DLESE Data Services Workshops Goals: To move the technical development of seamless access of distributed datasets and supporting resources forward To develop Earth Exploration Toolbook chapters that will facilitate the use of available Earth science datasets and data access and analysis tools in education

DLESE Data Services Workshops Data Providers and Tools Developers become better informed of Earth science data access and analysis needs, and tool and interface usability by teachers and students to help guide further development Curriculum Developers and Educators become better informed of available data and data analysis tools to use in educational modules

DLESE Data Services Workshops: THREDDS THematic Real-time Environmental Distributed Data Services Connecting People-Documents-Data Integrating real-time environmental data into Online educational materials Digital libraries (DLESE, NSDL) Initial Project 18 Data Provider Organizations 7 Analysis/Display Tools Builders 9 Interoperability Partners Newly funded THREDDS 2G – focus on GIS

DLESE Data Services Workshops: THREDDS THematic Real-time Environmental Distributed Data ServicesPeopleDocumentsData Catalog Generation Tools Analysis and Visualization Tools Data Services Discovery and Publication Tools Discovery and Publication Services Data Catalog Services THREDDSMiddleware

DLESE Data Services Workshops:Earth Exploration Toolbook (EET) EET chapters provide step-by-step instructions for teachers to use an Earth science dataset and analysis tool in an educational context EET template - an online form (a Web page generating tool) for creating new EET chapters. Permits the development of additional chapters by others not from the EET project. Recognized as a collection within DLESE Discoverable through DLESE and NSDL

DDS Workshops: Strategic Partnerships Groups who have discipline specific datasets and data access and analysis tools and a vested interest in Integrating their data with other datasets and with educational materials to create compound documents Developing educational modules using their data and data analysis tools. Strategic partners will be selected based on recommendations from the DAWG as to where a focused discipline effort might benefit DLESE

DLESE Data Services Workshops – Draft Agenda

DLESE Data Services Workshops: Follow-up Create technical and educational reports/recommendations from output recorded in swiki’s Follow-up with curriculum developers to facilitate completion of EET chapters started at workshop – stipend for completed chapters Workshop Evaluation

Project Specific Workshops Groups proposing to develop broad access to their specific datasets Educational component built into proposal Subcontract to DLESE Data Services to facilitate a workshop for that team to  develop desired data access and analysis (ie THREDDS)  educational modules (ie EET chapters)

Opportunities to Contribute and Participate in DLESE Data Services Participate in DLESE Data Services Workshops Educators participate in Needs Assessment for data and data analysis tools Identify your existing educational modules utilizing Earth science datasets and data analysis tools that are used by the educational community to DDS team to be cataloged in DLESE. Participate in Data Access Working Group (DAWG) community listserve.
