What is Satire?

Definition A humorous way of presenting stories, incidents, events, and people which holds up folly and vice to ridicule Folly-people’s foolish behavior or character flaws Vice-people’s bad or immoral habits Basically, satire makes fun of people or issues that are stupid or bad.

How to Spot Satire Use the laughter/knives test Who is being criticized? Target? Someone or something stupid or bad What humorous techniques are being used to achieve this purpose?

Purpose To teach us something about ourselves or our society Hold up a mirror to our foolish behavior or our vices

Context You have to know the culture/background information behind the satire or the jokes will fall flat.

Satire Techniques Irony-communicates the opposite of what is meant; often uses tone of voice or body language—if only written, readers must pick up on subtle cues Sarcasm-sneering, bitter, cutting remarks; twisting the knife Ridicule-deride with contempt Exaggeration-over-the-top hyperbole Caricature-visual exaggeration to the extreme, often using stereotypes Parody-imitate and make fun of an existing work—need to know the original. Scary Movie parodies horror films.

What to Remember The satire techniques will overlap, and that is okay. Remember that you are looking for HUMOR and CRITICISM. Often times, you won’t find the satire funny enough to provoke laughter. That doesn’t mean it isn’t satire. You should be looking for the TECHNIQUES utilized to create the satire. That is the HUMOR. Author always has a satirical intent, which is basically the BIG PICTURE. Why did they create this in the first place? What are they trying to expose?
