Tables and Graphs

Vocabulary Statistics – The branch of mathematics dealing with the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of information. Data – Information used in statistics, usually in numerical form. Variable – A characteristic of a person or thing which can be classified, counted, ordered or measured. Population – The set of ALL individuals or objects you want to study. Sample – A subset of the population. Survey – Gathering facts or opinions through an interview or questionnaire. Census – A survey of the entire population of the United States. Random – When each member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen.

Population, Sample, Variable Nike wants to test out a new shoe to see the level of appeal by only releasing it in Florida. After a 3 month trial, the number of purchases is evaluated. What is the population? What is the Sample? What is the Variable?

Finding Percentages Formula Variable # ____________________________ Population #

Example There are 4 green socks, 3 yellow socks, 7 blue socks, and 11 black socks in a drawer. What percentage of the socks in the drawer are green? Yellow? Blue and Black? Black and Green?

Example Mr. Immerman has a bunch of change in his pocket. He has 18 pennies, 10 nickels, 13 dimes, and 4 quarters. What percentage of change is pennies? Nickels or less? Nickels or higher?

Calculating Central Angle X Variable # ____ = ____________________ 360 Population # X= Central Angle of Pie Piece

Solving Central Angle X Variable # _________ = _________________________ 360 Population # Cross Multiply (Variable #) x 360 = (Population #) x X Solve for X

Central Angles Green Socks? Blue and Black socks? Pennies?

Circle Graphs (Pie Charts)

Continued…

Example There are 10 red shirts, 11 blue shirts, 3 green shirts, and 20 white shirts hanging up in the closet. Draw a circle graph showing the distribution of colors of shirts hanging up.

Example 50 students wore flip flops to school today, 86 students wore tennis shoes, 25 students wore dress shoes, and 99 students wore slippers. Draw a circle graph showing the distribution of footwear at school today.

Example Out of 35 students, 20 like the Vikings, 10 like the Bears, 4 like the Lions, and 1 likes the Packers. Draw a circle graph showing the distribution of favorite NFL Teams in the class.
