1 Chapter 1: The World of Earth Science

2 Density is defined as the mass of an object per unit volume. It is the relationship between the mass and volume of a certain object So what does that mean? If the molecules are more compact or packed together, it is said to have more density. If they are loosely packed, they are said to be less dense.

3 The density of freshwater is 1 g/mL or 1 g/cm 3 Density is often observed and compared together with water. If an object is denser than water, it will sink. If it is less dense than water, it will float. For example, oil will float because it is less dense than water. However, a rock will sink when placed in water because it is said to be more compact or denser than water.

4 It’s simple….D = m/v! Cover up what you want to solve for and go for it! If the values are on top of each other, you divide. If they are next to each other, you multiply.

5 Mass: 15 g Volume: 20 mL Mass: 1000 g Volume: 50 mL Mass: 225 g Volume: 100 mL Mass: 10 g Volume: 200 mL If the density is less than 1.0 g/cm 3 then it will float. 1 g/mL = 1 g/cm 3 Will it float in water? Determine if the following shapes will float in water by calculating the density for each item. Density: 0.75 g/mL Density: 20.0 g/mL Density: 2.25 g/mL Density: 0.05 g/mL
