Chemistry Notes Density

density – the mass of an object per unit volume ex) the density of a substance describes how tightly packed the molecules are

Density density = mass volume D = m V

Important Units Mass is measured in grams. Liquid volume is measured in mL. Solid volume is measured in cm 3. Liquid density is measured in g/mL. Solid density is measured in g/cm 3.

An object will float if it is less dense than the liquid it is immersed in. ex) oil floats on water because oil is less dense than water

An object will sink if it is more dense than the liquid it is immersed in. ex) a rock will sink in water because it is more dense than water

QUESTION #1: Why does diet coke float in water, but regular coke sinks in water? Regular coke is more dense than diet coke because it contains 39 grams of sugar, whereas diet coke has 0.1 grams of Nutrasweet.

QUESTION # 2: A cruise ship is very heavy, so why does it float?

QUESTION #3: Which is more dense: ice or water?

QUESTION #4: Liquid A, Liquid B and Liquid C are all poured together. Liquid B is less dense than liquid C. Liquid A is more dense than liquid C. Which liquid would sink to the bottom? (Hint: draw a picture) Liquid A sinks because it is the most dense

Pick up a calculator

QUESTION # 5: What is the density of a liquid that has a mass of 1.70 grams and a volume of 2 mL? D = m / V 1.70 g / 2 mL = 0.85 g/mL Would it sink or float in water? It would float because it is less dense than water. (1 g/mL)

QUESTION # 6: What is the mass of a 500.00 mL sample of seawater with a density of 1.025 g/mL? A.487.8 g B.500.0 g C.512.5 g D.625.0 g

QUESTION # 7:

QUESTION # 8: What is the density at 20 0 C of 12.0 mL of a liquid that has a mass of 4.05 grams? A.0.338 g/mL B.2.96 g/mL C.16.1 g/mL D.48.6 g/mL

Return your calculators. Tuesday we will do an activity dealing with density along with a practice sheet.
