Salinization and Waterlogging Jada Burgess, Noe Tamayo, Cameron McCoy

Waterlogging is the excess of water present within the soil, which is potentially harmful to many plant species. Salinization is the result of an unusually high concentration of salt within the water available to plants Waterlogging Salinization

Waterlogging is the result of over saturation of the soil with water, and therefore may be the effect of excess rainfall, or more than adequate irrigation. Salinization usually occurs in areas where the soil is naturally rich in water soluble salts, or may also be the result of irrigation without proper salt drainage prior. Causes

Weeds (Toad Rush, Cotula, Dock, Yorkshire Frog Grass, etc.) are typically much more susceptible to the harmful effects of waterlogging and salinization, but almost all crops are capable of being harmed by them, as well. Types of crops being affected ~>

Waterlogged plants are typically not affected closer to the surface until the waterlogging has become very severe; however, plants beginning to be affected are essentially strangled, incapable of taking in the gases they need, because of the anaerobic environment produced by waterlogged soil. An over abundance of salt within the soil means infertility for people planning to grow crops, because high amounts of salt hinder the plants ability to take in the nutrients that are necessary for it’s development. Ecological impacts of salinization and waterlogging

There are several ways to combat these problems, the most common, however is to to drain the soil of excess water, sometimes accomplished with the employment of certain plants. Is there a way to prevent or remedy this problem?
