Secondly, cilia are found throughout the airways. The cilia wave in unison, flushing any foreign particles up and out of the airways. 58 #5 Why must the alveolar membranes be thin? The alveolar membranes must be thin enough to allow diffusion of carbon dioxide and oxygen. Therefore, they consist of only one layer of cells.

When it contracts, it is pulled downward, causing more space in the rib cage, allowing the lungs to expand.
