Exploitation of ISS Scientific data EGI-Aparsen Workshop March 4-6 2014 Science Park– Amsterdam – The Netherlands Cooperative ISS Research data Conservation and Exploitation

March 4-6 2014EGI-Aparsen Workshop2 Motivation for space data preservation Peculiarity of space experiments:  Space data is precious and has very relevant scientific value  Need for Preservation and Exploitation  a wide range of scientific domains is involved  the preparation time is very long  space missions are very expensive  repetition/extension of successful experiments also requires long time and is expensive  space experiments are selected by a rigorous peer review  Data preservation will allow the scientific community to easily retrieve and use data, also in the long term, through a simple and unique access point

March 4-6 2014EGI-Aparsen Workshop3 Courtesy of ESA International Space Station  ISS allows research in many different scientific disciplines, as:  astronomy  radiation physics  plasma physics  space technology  astrobiology  atmosphere and environment  human physiology and medicine  material science  fluid science & combustion  biology  ISS exploitation is part of the ESA ELIPS programme exposed pressurized  The International Space Station is the largest laboratory for conducting research in space

March 4-6 2014EGI-Aparsen Workshop4 European experiments in space

March 4-6 2014EGI-Aparsen Workshop5 European experiments in space

March 4-6 2014EGI-Aparsen Workshop6 European experiments in space

March 4-6 2014EGI-Aparsen Workshop7 Courtesy of ESA European experiments in space  ELIPS achievements (i.e. ELIPS-1/-2/-3, 2002-2012 period) - #investigations:  Ground-based facilities: ~ 100  Parabolic flights: ~ 500  Sounding rockets: ~60  Retrievable capsules: ~85  ISS: ~230  ELIPS-4 near-term projections (2013-2016 period) - #investigations (per annum):  Ground-based facilities: 25 to 35  Parabolic flights: 20 to 35  Sounding rockets: up to 5  ISS: 35 to 45  ISS data production: ~6-8 TB/year Source: ESA HSO
