The unemployment rate in the UK is currently 7.6% In an ideal world We would have a minimum amount of people unemployed At the moment there are 2.48 million people unemployed in the UK (with the population being around 63 million people).

Over the UK

You also must be unemployed through no fault of your own (done nothing wrong like getting fired). How do you know if you are unemployed? A person is classed as unemployed if you are of working age (about 16-65 years old) and do not have a job If you are unemployed you can receive unemployment benefits. To be eligible for these benefits, you must meet certain requirements.

Benefits are paid for by the public’s taxes. There are different types of benefits that people can get. Child benefit This benefit isn’t only open to unemployed people, it includes a huge range of circumstances for anyone with children under the age of 16 and it can really help if you’re struggling to financially support your family. Jobseekers allowance You must be actively searching for a job.. Anyone who is unemployed with little or no savings or income could be entitled to this. Housing benefit It is run by your local council. This is money to help pay your rent for where you live. This can be kept a secret from people if you don’t want anyone to know. Council tax You won’t receive this money directly, it will just automatically come off your council tax bill and you could save up to 100% of your total annual bill!

You are not eligible for these benefits if... You are/were self-employed You quit your previous job without good reason You were fired for misconduct (bad behaviour) You resigned because of illness (check on disability benefits) You left to get married

But... This could all change in the future...

Possible future plans Idea 1: Everyone between the ages of 16 and 25 are not able to receive benefits. Unless, their parents earn under a certain amount of money, which would then make them able the receive benefits. Problem: This would leave a lot of young people, particularly students, without an income if they did not have a job. Idea 2: Universal Credit is introduced and this replaces all 6 benefits with one. The idea is that as people earn more, their Universal credit reduces. Problem: Universal credit is received at the start of the month, meaning some people may not have money at the end of that month.
