Guiding Questions Compare how the characters and the seals change during the story. What kinds of activities might Ben do someday with his own grandchildren? What lessons about nature do you think the author is trying to bring out? How would you describe the relationship between Ben and his grandad? Choose a topic to write about. Use the graph on the following slide and cite the text to justify your answer. Use the secret recipe to respond to one of the questions.

Who was talking to Whom? Where When What did they say? “Quote” Explain Quote Here… Analysis This shows….. Because Clearly, should This Proves…. would Obviosly, could It seems... might This suggests… Evidently It appears… Clearly If…then… Obviously Fiction Nonfiction

Additional Extensions You may want to choose one of the extension activities on the following slides to focus on additional skills or to help students make connections.

Animal Helpers Ben is saved by a seal. Meet with a group of classmates to talk about animals who help people Think about: How do animals help people? Do you know any animals that have helped people? What other animal helpers have you read about or heard about? What did they do? On your own, write a paragraph about animal helpers.

Picture in Words Pictures help tell the story of Seal Surfer. In fact, the pictures tell details that are not in the story. Go through the story, and write a caption for each picture. Tell something about the story that you learn about from the picture. Then meet with a group. Share your captions Talk about the new things you saw in each picture. (Use as a pre-view picture walk for prediction before reading the story. Revisit after reading the story and rewrite captions)

Surf and Scan Play this game with a group of classmates. First, work alone and find a fact in Seal Surfer. Write the fact, the page where you found it, and the name of the season on a index card. Now take turns with your group. Read the fact and the season off your card. Everyone scans the parts of the story that talk about that season to find the fact. Whoever finds the fact first gets one point. Play until everyone has read their cards.

My Own Music Ben’s grandfather liked to listen to Beethoven when he returned from fishing. What kind of music do you like? Meet with a group. List five different times when you listen to music. For example when you do chores or play. Now work on your own. List types of music you would listen to during each activity. Next, meet with your group again. Compare your music. Talk about what you like to listen to, when, and why.

Seasons Seal surfer tells a story by the seasons. It is divided into parts. Each part named after a season. How do the seasons in the story compare to seasons where you live? Make a three-column chart like the one on the next slide. Look through the story. Find details that describe the season. Write those details in the chart Now think of something that happens during each season where you live for example, in the story the seal is born in the spring. What happens in the spring where you live? Put it in the chart.

SeasonsSeal SurferWhere I Live Spring Summer Fall Winter

Halla and Ben You read about Halla in Nights of the Pufflings. Now you’ve read about Ben. Compare and contrast these two characters using a Venn diagram. When you’ve completed your diagram, meet with a group. Discuss your comparisons. Did you list the same differences? Do you agree on how Halla and Ben are alike? How are they different?
