7 Why Weimar? After the January 1919 elections for the new Constituent Assembly, there was so much unrest and violence in Berlin that it was decided that this new government should meet outside of the city in a town called Weimar. It therefore became known as the Weimar Republic. Violence in Berlin 1919

11 The Weimar Constitution Article 1The German Reich is a Republic. Political authority comes from the people Article 22The Reichstag delegates are elected by Proportional Representation Article 41The Reich President is elected by the whole of the German electorate Article 48If public safety and order is disturbed or endangered the Reich President can rule by Emergency Decree. 13 Weaknesses The constitution was finalised in August 1919. It was the first time that Germany had experienced democracy and there were many flaws in the constitution.
