3 The South Atlantic Slave system - mainly in Brazil and West Indies; - sugar was the main export with the use of slaves - - uge Profits to England as a result; guns, iron, rum and cloth were traded for slaves. - the sugar/slave trade stimulated all aspects of the British Economy.

4  Slavery formally established in 1670,  Slavery becomes justified by southern whites on the basis of race  Family life was limited, but created strong family bonds  The middle Passage – more than 1 million died en route; those that survived became slaves. Early Colonial slavery

5 Slave Economy – VA, MD & the Carolinas VA & MD - the “Tobacco Revolution”; after Bacon’s rebellion, the elite took advantage of the slave - slave codes were established - better working and living conditions than WI - slave children were encouraged to increase workforce (by mid 18 th century, ¾ of slaves were American born) The Carolinas (south Carolina ) - Slave Labor much more harsh, but slower growing - colony became wealthy from the growth of rice. - climate conditions were harsh and life in the swamp lands and illness killed many slaves

6 Reaction to the imperial slave Economy 1.The rise of African communities -diverse group; -Friendships and marriage across ethnic lines blurred the clan or family affiliation -Common language developed -Some African values remained 2. The rise of slave codes – - denied education, accumulation of material possessions, the right to associate with others, 3. The Stono Rebellion 1739 - the Spanish governor of Florida promised all slaves their freedom, to force all the slaves to run away - war broke out between England and Spain, and during 75 African led a revolt near the Stono River
