1 Directions for Portfolio Cover Page: Center in the middle of the page from left to right margin and the top to bottom margins Double space between lines Use any font you want Font size: 20-26 Decorate cover page so that it reflects your interests and hobbies. This is your title: Language Arts Portfolio 8 th Grade 2010-2011 First last name A border slapped on to the page is not acceptable – The cover page needs to teach the reader something about you. It gives the reader a snapshot of YOU and the things that make you who you are (as long as it is appropriate for school). See example on next slide

3 Top Ten Promises to Myself While in High School Directions- think about your near future in high school Write ten sentences explaining what promises you will make to yourself while attending high school. Sentences must be in complete thoughts. You must start each sentence differently. In other words, you may not start each sentence by saying, “I promise….” Type and center the above title on your document. Number your document 10 -1 Write the sentences from least important to most important. Add meaningful pictures and remember to wash them out. Center your first and last name and today’s date at the bottom of the document. See the example on the next slide.

5 Part I: Yard Sale Today Directions: Fill in the yard sale signs with items from your life that you would like to “clean out.” Each sign represents something in your life( a behavior, attitude or emotion) that you would like to dispose of to start your high school days with a clean slate. For each signs write a behavior, attitude or emotion you have that you want to “sell”(get rid of) and place a price on each one. Copy and paste the following slide into your PowerPoint program and change the wording and prices on each sign to represent you. Make sure to write your first and last name in the text box at the bottom.

7 Part II: Writing Activity Use Microsoft Word to type and submit to Criterion Choose one of your behaviors written on the signs and in a minimum of an eight sentence paragraph address the following: Give a real-life example of a time you “exposed” this behavior in you Tell why it is best to get rid of it What new positive behavior will take its place.

8 Good Bye Veterans Park Hello High School THINK POSITIVE THOUGHTS NOW! Write four (4) things (not people) that you will miss when you leave our school. Be creative and don’t write four subjects. On the same line, give a reason why you will miss these things. Write four (4)things you are looking forward to when you get to high school. Now follow the format for this poem on the next slide and fill in the blanks with your THINGS. Remove the () for each line. Add meaningful pictures Type your first and last name at the bottom center with today’s date.

10 Head Lines Write a poem about the things going on in your head following the sample poem on the next slide. After you read the sample, go to the next two slides. The first slide is for girls. The second slide is for boys. Copy and save the slide onto your PowerPoint and fill in the blanks accordingly. Remember to write your first and last name and date on the bottom center of page.

Add a meaningful picture Print out your Works Cited page Make sure you follow the format in your research packet; use easybib.com or Citation Machine Print out research paper

15 Writing Portfolio Table of Contents Go to my website and click on the menu tab titled Portfolio Table of Contents. Open the attachment and print for your writing portfolio. Your portfolio needs to be in the order of the Table of Contents page. Remove your What’s in a Name? and place your cover page inside of the visible view pocket. The Table of Contents page is the first page of your portfolio.
