Current Product Old machine Motor recently died Oil splatter Senior Design 2012-2013 Created the displacement control mechanism for the vibration apparatus

Problem Statement: Project 14471 Cooper Crouse-Hinds Industries is a leader in the manufacturing of luminaires, an encased lighting system, for hazardous locations. These luminaires are placed in environments in which they are subject to harsh vibrational disturbances. Luminaires must meet the testing standards set in UL 844, which include vibration RPM and displacement, apparatus setup, and test duration. The company is currently using an outdated testing apparatus and would like to incorporate improvements into the new design. This project is a continuation of P13471 which started the process and has already built the eccentric drive mechanism. The new design still requires a frame, motor, and control system.

Background Information Luminaire A lighting fixture that could be exposed to hazardous conditions UL 844: Test fixture must: Vibrate luminaire at 2000 cycles/min Total displacement of 1/32” Operate for 35 hours

Project Deliverables Completed frame Appropriate motor selection and implementation Speed Control Alternatives Visual display Speed of motor Displacement Documentation User Manual Maintenance Manual Test data verifying the operation of the apparatus

Stakeholders Primary Customer: Joe Manahan Cooper Crouse-Hinds Dr. Varela Team 14471 Lab Technicians Secondary Customer: Companies who purchase luminaires from Cooper Crouse-Hinds RIT
