Pt. 5, “The Helmet of Salvation”

 The Armor of God  Part 1: The Belt of Truth  Part 2: The Breastplate of Righteousness  Part 3: Feet Shod with the Preparation of the Gospel of Peace  Part 4: The Shield of Faith

 Ephesians 6:10-20, “10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.  13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so

 that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit,

 which is the word of God.  18 With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, 19 and pray on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in proclaiming it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.”

 Ephesians 6:17, “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

 “The helmet for the Roman soldier was made of bronze and had cheek pieces, provided protection for another vital part, the head.” - Andrew T. Lincoln

 The Helmet of Salvation  Exodus 15:2a, “The Lord is my strength and song,  And He has become my salvation;”  2 Samuel 22:47, “The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock; And exalted be God, the rock of my salvation.”

 Psalm 18:2, “The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”  Psalm 25:5, “Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; For You I wait all the day.”

 Psalm 27:1, “The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread?”  Psalm 37:39, “But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD; He is their strength in time of trouble.”  Isaiah 45:17, “Israel has been saved by the LORD With an everlasting salvation; You will not be put to shame or humiliated To all eternity.”

 Isaiah 59:17,  “He put on righteousness like a breastplate,  And a helmet of salvation on His head;  And He put on garments of vengeance for clothing  And wrapped Himself with zeal as a mantle.”

 The salvation that God has made available for His people, and the world, came through His son, Jesus Christ.  Matthew 1:21, “She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

 Acts 4:10-12, “10 Let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by this name this man stands here before you in good health. 11 He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone. And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

 Romans 10:9-10, “9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;…for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.”  1 Timothy 1:15, “It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am foremost of all.”

 Ephesians 1:13-14, “13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.”

 2 Corinthians 7:10, “For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.”  1 Thessalonians 5:8, “But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.”

 “…what ultimately protects believers is that God has already rescued them from bondage to the prince of the realm of the air and seated them with Christ in the heavenly realms (cf. Eph. 2:1- 10). By appropriating this salvation as their helmet, believers have every reason to be confident of the outcome of the battle.” - Andrew T. Lincoln

 One of the greatest areas that the devil attacks: Our minds.  He does this by using two destructive and powerful weapons: doubt and discouragement

 “The Roman soldier had to defend himself against a broadsword. Satan’s broadsword has two sides to it: discouragement and doubt. Satan wants to belt you in the head with discouragement and doubt….Many people suffer from doubt and discouragement, but the helmet of salvation is our protection.” – John McArthur, The Believer’s Armor

 “And take the helmet of salvation…”  More accurately translated “receive” or “accept.”  “‘Take’ is really receive or accept. The previous items were laid out for the soldier to pick up. The helmet and sword would be handed him by an attendant or by his armor bearer.” - A. Skevington Wood  “Believers are to “receive,” i.e., from God who offers them, “the helmet” and “the sword.” - Andrew T. Lincoln

 Salvation from three perspectives: Past, Present, and Future.  A). Saved from the Penalty of our Sin – Justification (Past)  B). Saved from the Power of our Sin – Sanctification (Present),  C). Saved from the Presence of Sin – Glorification (Future).” - Charles Price

 Past Salvation: Justification  Ephesians 2:8-9, “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”  We have been saved from the penalty of our sin. The price has been paid by Jesus’ atoning death upon the cross.

 Present Salvation: Sanctification  We are being saved from the power of our sin day by day.  “The saving death of Christ saves us at a moment in time. But the saving life of Christ, the risen life imparted to us by the Holy Spirit, goes on saving us. We are being saved by His Life from sin’s power.” - Charles Price

 Present Salvation: Sanctification  1 Corinthians 1:19, “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”  2 Corinthians 2:15, “For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing;”

 Present Salvation: Sanctification  Romans 5:10, “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.”   “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, it is much more [certain], now that we are reconciled, that we shall be saved (daily delivered from sin’s dominion) through His [resurrection] life.” - Amplified Version

 Future Salvation: Glorification  Romans 13:11, “Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.”

 Future Salvation: Glorification  1 Peter 1:3-5, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

 Future Salvation: Glorification  Hebrews 9:28, “…so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.”  Will you be one of those who receives salvation in this life and the life to come?
