Getting thinking Watch the following clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYCkFTyADJ0 In 3’s discuss the following: When should people start having sex When should they stop? Should people be in a relationship to have sex Should sex be for having children, for pleasure, or for something else? Should there be rules about when to have sex and with whom?

KEY terms:Do you know them? Adultery Co-habitation Faithfulness Pre-marital sex Promiscuity Homosexuality For each of the above come up with arguments that people might include to support them/disagree with them.……..

Rules???? Helpful or not? Rules often help to clarify common values Rules also set out expectations of how others behave Rules are usually intended to help people live well together E.g. “it is good to be faithful when you have promised to be, so don’t commit adultery” How would it be if you don’t share the same values in a relationship? Why might it be helpful to have some rules about sex?

Christian teaching about Sex and marriage The Catholic church teaches: Sex is an act of love and commitment, it binds two people together and is intended to be a fruitful act (giving children to the couple) hence should only take place within a marriage which provides a stable basis for family and partnership. “The sexual act must only take place exclusively within marriage. Outside marriage it always constitutes a grave sin” (Catechism of the catholic church) Hence pre-marital sex, adultery and casual sex (promiscuity) are all wrong

Christian teaching about Sex and marriage What are the POSITIVE things that could come from these rules?

Christian teaching about Sex and marriage Other Christians might think: The heart of the Christian message is about love, what is important is that 2 people love each other, this means that they are faithful and supportive. Marriage is a social construct and it is different in different cultures and in different ages: in 21 st western society “common law marriage” (co-habiting) is the modern form of marriage. Christians who hold this view would say that co- habiting couples must be faithful to each other.

Christian teaching about Sex and marriage Other Christians might think: Any loving relationship reveals something of God (The Bible says “ God is love, those who live in love live in God and he lives in them”) Hence as long as the sexual relationship is mutual, loving and faithful it is something to be celebrated

Christian teaching about Sex and marriage All Christians believe sex is a sacred act hence: Almost no Christians would argue that it is OK to sleep around or commit adultery
