Policies, Pitfalls and the Pursuit of BYOT Dave Mirra Jay Cooke Stafford County Public Schools

BYO….. B? T? D?

The big question WHY?

SCOPE

Some Current Strategies All in Kind of in Not in

Challenge or Opportunity? Camera Phones and Locker Rooms Access to Students 24/7 Cheating on Tests Texting answers Texting Questions Sharing information with teachers Sharing information with classmates

Stafford’s Cell Phone Policy Cellular phone, or like device, use or display of in the school building or on school grounds during the school day or any use or display at any time while on a school bus is prohibited.

Policy Examples Students are allowed to use their cell phones before and after school in either of the school’s two foyers. Otherwise, students must have their cell phones turned off and out of sight during school hours.

Policy Examples Electronic devices including cell phones and mp3 players may be used before school, during lunch and after school. They must be kept in lockers the rest of the day and can’t be taken into classrooms or restrooms.

Policy Examples Students are not allowed to use their cell phones during school hours. Cell phones must be turned off and out of sight during that time. Students are, however, allowed to use their cell phones during their lunch period.

Policy Examples Cell phones must be turned off and kept out of sight during the school day. At the end of the school day, students may use cell phones throughout the building but must have teacher permission to use the cell phone in a teacher’s classroom. If a student wants to use a cell phone for medical, family, vocational, or other reasons, permission must be obtained from the building

Draft Policy Considerations Use tied to instruction At discretion of classroom teacher Silent mode? Use during testing? Camera Use? Non Instructional Use Permitted? Check In or Registration of Device? Maintenance/ Charges of own device

The Pursuit What are the requirements? What will the final product look like? Where are you now? Steps to get there?

Requirements Students will be creating things, do they need to save them? Do teachers want to print from their laptops? Of course you still need to filter, but do you align with varying levels at different schools? What about AUP and security?

Basic Network Traffic Types Inappropriate (filter!) Recreational (filter?) Relevant Mission Critical (protect it.)

Only Practical Solution is WiFi BYOT devices are mostly WiFi. Enterprise wireless systems can support high density at relatively low cost, also has rogue access point detection. Can have multiple networks in one access point for different levels of access.

If you build it… Access Point Density (1 AP per 4 classrooms minimum) IP addresses (2+ for every being in your building) Bandwidth (Does traffic shaping still make sense?) TEACHER TRAINING

Multi-Level Network Design Secure Network School Managed Devices Only Staff BYOT Network User Authenticated from Directory Student BYOT Network Same design as Staff but n/a until policy Public Access Limited distribution, completely open
