10 Here are some famous CEO’S – which company do/DID they run? STEVE JOBS - APPLE MARK ZUCKERBURG - FACEBOOK OPRAH WINFRY – HARPO PRODUCTIONS RICHARD BRANSON – VIRGIN GROUP KARREN BRADY - VICE CHAIR WEST HAM F.C All of these CEO’s have had to make tough decisions and big changes to their business in order for it to remain strong and successful! What CHANGES will YOU make?

11 Allen & Overy understand that in order for a company to run smoothly, they MUST be up to date with current business affairs. Over time, great companies will re-evaluate company ideas and ethics and make big changes. This must be done so the business will stay successful, stay up to date, and grow. Here are some successful businesses that have evolved and changed with the times… Started off as a dating website for Harvard University. Mark Zuckerberg decided that he wanted to create an even bigger network for people to connect with each other – this would be done by encouraging people revealing more information online. AOL began as a video on demand company. The company changed its whole concept in order to keep up with times and to remain a strong brand. Tiffany & CO are now one of the world’s leading jewellery companies – they make millions of pounds every year, and they started off as a very small company selling paper. ALL of these companies have thrived from the positive changes they have made - what will YOU do for YOUR organisation?

12 WARNING! Making bad decisions can result in companies failing, losing money or even being closed down for good! GROUP TASK 1 Here is a list of companies that sadly over time had to close down or be put into administration – some might argue that this is because of bad decision making. In your group see if you can link the reason for closure to the correct company.

13 Which did you get correct? This shopping channel closed after huge financial losses, and from being unable to keep up with leading internet competitors. Failed due to creating games deemed un-enjoyable and out of date. Closed after Vodafone and EE ended all contracts. Landed themselves with a £385,000.000.000 debt; unable to sell to buyer as customers sales plummeted after the late 80s. Lack of planning meant this company was not prepared for the housing crisis - nobody could afford to buy from this company – sales fell drastically and the company closed in 2008.

14 The former CEO of the multinational conglomerate company, Honeywell, said… “There are some DOs and DON’TS if you are thinking of becoming a CEO – some of the ‘don’ts’ sneak up on you. Arrogance – Do NOT think you are right all the time. You are still part of a team, despite leading. Habitual Distrust – Do not always focus on the negatives! Stay positive at all times. Lack of belief - Do you really believe in what you say? Perfectionist – You need to remain creative with ideas at all times! Don’t be rigid with your thoughts. Remain flexible and confident, get the big things right, and the small things wrong!” - Peter Cairo It is really important you choose an organisation you are passionate about so that you can be motivated with what you have to say!

15 GROUP TASK 2 One aspect of business that always evolves is marketing – will this be something you will want to work on? In your groups redesign a company logo or tag line so that it changes the way we view it in a positive way. For Example: What do you think McDonalds were trying to achieve here? McDonalds created a new, environmental corporate logo, they made it green so that they appear more environmentally friendly / conscious about eco - living. Be as imaginative and creative as you wish!

Individual Task - Pick your company Write down the name and tag line (if they have one) 16 Who is their target audience? Quickly write down 5 key facts you know about them Write down what you like about them

Your company How does your company impact the local community? Do you wish to create more work experience opportunities? What does your company do for the environment? Could you improve employee benefits? If so, how? Staff training, increase wages ? Does your company have a volunteer programme? Do they have a diversity policy? How can you adapt & improve it? 17 Mind map issues within the company you could address, see examples below:

18 HOW WILL YOU ATTRACT THE BEST EMPLOYEES TO YOUR COMPANY?

19 Now you have your company, it is time to articulate what you want to do in just 200 words. That’s not a lot so use this rough structure to help you stay within the word limit: What is the name of the company you wish to be the new CEO of, and what issue are you focusing on? (50 words) HOW do you see this change happening? Why is this important to you? (100 words) WHO will be affected by your changes and actions? (25 words) HOW will you make the changes? (25 words)

20 Final helping hints… WHO are you writing for? Sentences and paragraphs What’s your point? Tone Creativity Avoid awkward sentences Clear, punchy, compact sentences One paragraph, one idea, one example Read it out loud, if it’s hard to say it is hard to read!

21 SUBMISSION TIME! YOU NOW HAVE 15 MINUTES TO COMPLETE YOUR SUBMISSION! Don’t forget to tell us who the company is and whether they are fictional or real Outline the problem: how will you attract the best employees to your business? Use what we have discussed throughout the workshop to help you. It must be 200 words minimum Fill in the declaration form with your details Staple it to your submission and hand in at the front of the class

What issues are you focusing on? What is the solution? Tell us in 200 words Submit Challenge closes…. Summary Jan 2016
